very little guidance,
By Tamara (Sunny Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI) Guidebook/Cookbook (Paperback)
I bought this book because my son has MSPI, hopeful of all the information I would learn regarding his affliction. I was very disappointed. This is basically a cookbook that has uninspired recipes, and little medical information. If you can read labels and substitute rice milk for cow's milk in your recipes, you already have the majority of the information in this cookbook.

Helped me so much,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI) Guidebook/Cookbook (Paperback)
This book helped me out so much. I was so lost when my first baby was hospitalized for milk/soy protein allergies. I was forced to discontinue breastfeeding and put him on very very expensive formula that had to be specially ordered from the pharmacy that insurance would not cover. When I was expecting my second child I did my research determined I would be able to breastfeed this time around. This is how I came across this book. I found most of the information I needed in this book as to what I could and couldn't eat as well as some great recipes. I was able to successfully breastfeed my daughter for a year when I weaned her. That was a year and a half ago. This book is so good I still choose to follow the diet. My children have grown out of their allergies but I still use many recipes from the cookbook portion of the book. I would highly recommend this guide.

This cookbook is by a mother who breastfed her dairy/soy allergic infant and these are the tips and recipes she used to make doing so manageable.
Some of the recipes are upscale (pesto etc.) - but they run the gamut. She has great advice about how to manage eating out at restaurants, friends', etc., and shopping lists too. This recipe made my own diet, also limited by a dairy/soy allergic breastfed infant, much more manageable. I have since given a copy to my Pediatrician so she has it available for other mothers to whom she suggests this diet, because I know it can seem really overwhelming at first!

My first born was disagnosed with MSPI shortly after I had quit nursing. Now that I'm expecting again, I was urged to start the MSPI diet at 32 weeks to reduce the amount of irritants in mine and the baby's systems. This book was a great jumping off point. It provided the basics of what you can and can't have as well as helpful alternatives. I have yet to try any of the recipes, but have a few bookmarked to try soon. The author's credibility with have 2 children of her own with MSPI is comforting. I have since found that the internet and reading labels has been the best plan of attack. Once you're tuned into label reading, it does truly amaze you at the amount of soy and milk in products that you would least suspect.

I was a bit disappointed by the small number of recipes, however, everything I have made has been delicious. My husband has even liked the food!

This was a very helpful book. It has made the diet adjustment easier and given me great ideas for recipes. I found it interesting that the author of the book is also from Omaha. I'm glad someone put a book together, this is the only one I could find.

I bought this book because my daughter was diagnosed with a milk allergy. I was still breastfeeding and needed to get milk and soy out of my diet. I bought the book with the hopes that it would give me some good recipes to make for dinners. The recipes however are bland and boring. I was able to make better meals on my own without milk than with the help of this book. The book was good in the fact that it has information regarding the milk allergy itself in the introduction. It provides alternatives to items that may already be in your kitchen that include milk you may have not thought about. Other than that part I really didn't use it too much. I was better off just sticking to meat, vegetables and fruit as my diet for the time I was breastfeeding than using these recipes.

This book was a great help to me. I wanted to continue to breastfeed my daughter even though she had been diagnosed with a milk soy protein intolerance. It gave me a starting point and many ideas besides drinking water and eating cardboard.

I was given this title from the lactation specialist in Omaha, NE and it was my saving grace. I followed the ingredient list to a "T" and saw an overnight difference in our home. Ms. Field provided easy guidelines to follow with practical, available and affordable substitutes. Many guides substitute with products that are hard to find and very costly. Not this guidebook! I was able to nurse successfully and feed her the foods she could tolerate when she was of age to do so. I would recommend this book to anyone with a "colic" baby!

Good news & bad news.,

This review is from: The Milk Soy Protein Intolerance (MSPI) Guidebook/Cookbook (Paperback)
The good news: This book is enthusiastic, upbeat, and has some very helpful information, including giving you some ideas for substitutions in the kitchen, if milk & soy are a problem. The bad news: If you're buying this book for the recipes, look out. If you're flexible in the kitchen, you won't have too many problems, but if you're the kind of cook who follows a recipe to the letter, you'll probably have some disappointments. Whatever you do, read the recipes all the way through before you start. In short, I rarely use this cookbook, but it does have some good points, and one can learn from it. Good for Mrs. Field. It takes guts and hard work to tackle a cookbook like this one.
