Biography

80s punk band Dead Kennedys are best known for their underground hit singles "California Über Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia", from their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) and the 1981 single entitled "Too Drunk to Fuck", which reached the top forty in the UK charts. In 1985 the Kennedys third album Frankenchrist came with a poster of H.R. Giger's controversial painting Penis… Read more in Amazon's Dead Kennedys Store

Editorial Reviews

Review

The very concept of a greatest hits collection from San Francisco punk legends the Dead Kennedys' fits right in with the group's penchant for establishment parody, but the irony is that Manifesto's 12-track Milking the Sacred Cow; is the perfect primer for young punks in training and a satisfying shot of politically charged jet fuel for longtime fans. Classic cuts like California Uber Alles, Holiday in Cambodia, and Too Drunk to Fuck were the gateway drug for a lot of people just finding their way into the scene, especially those who were looking for an American version of the Sex Pistols. Jello Biafra proved that he could match Johnny Rotten sneer for sneer but live versions of Soup Is Good Food and Jock-O-Rama, electrifying as they are, keep this collection just shy of perfection. That said, it still provides a satisfying crack in the jaw, even if it's missing fan favorites like Terminal Preppie, Trust Your Mechanic, and Chemical Warfare. Honor students should pick up Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Frankenchrist, and Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death, but those looking for a quick fix or a cheat will find no better teat to affix their snarl to than this. --All Music Guide

1.0 out of 5 stars Depressing and Unnecessary, February 18, 2008

From the shabby sub-40 minute running length to the awful artwork, it's obvious that Manifesto Records was actually being truthful when they gave this piece of product its "ironic" title. All you get are 10 previously released songs and two collector-bait live tracks that are just outtakes from "Mutiny on the Bay," and if those weren't even good enough to be included on there, what does that tell you? Sorry Ray, but it's stuff like this that makes me think you really were the bad guy after all.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a ripoff! Oi! Oi! Oi!, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Milking The Sacred Cow (Greatest Hits) (Audio CD)
it was inevitable wasn't it? so maybe jello was screwing the rest of the band out of royalties (mind you they wanted to claim writing credits for the songs, (mtv get off the air being one of them) and then they said that they were being ripped off coz jello didnt promote the songs and get them on mtv) but you can see why he wanted to protect the catalogue. im not against greatest hits sets, as long as the dont include new songs (what a rip that always is) or they dont disgrace the bands back catalogue. unfortunately, the three other DKs have done just that and offered up a minimal amount of tracks on this ripoff cd. dont remember them this way, go get give me convenience, plastic surgery disasters or fresh fruit.

If you support thieving, opportunistic back-stabbers, who repackage songs they were only minimally involved in creating, then this is the album for you.
