Depressing and Unnecessary,
By Jack Hoffman (Cal-ai-forn-ai-aye) - See all my reviews

From the shabby sub-40 minute running length to the awful artwork, it's obvious that Manifesto Records was actually being truthful when they gave this piece of product its "ironic" title. All you get are 10 previously released songs and two collector-bait live tracks that are just outtakes from "Mutiny on the Bay," and if those weren't even good enough to be included on there, what does that tell you? Sorry Ray, but it's stuff like this that makes me think you really were the bad guy after all.

What a ripoff! Oi! Oi! Oi!,
This review is from: Milking The Sacred Cow (Greatest Hits) (Audio CD)
it was inevitable wasn't it? so maybe jello was screwing the rest of the band out of royalties (mind you they wanted to claim writing credits for the songs, (mtv get off the air being one of them) and then they said that they were being ripped off coz jello didnt promote the songs and get them on mtv) but you can see why he wanted to protect the catalogue. im not against greatest hits sets, as long as the dont include new songs (what a rip that always is) or they dont disgrace the bands back catalogue. unfortunately, the three other DKs have done just that and offered up a minimal amount of tracks on this ripoff cd. dont remember them this way, go get give me convenience, plastic surgery disasters or fresh fruit.

If you support thieving, opportunistic back-stabbers, who repackage songs they were only minimally involved in creating, then this is the album for you.

Too short...,

I'm not going to touch the whole "Jello vs. the rest of DK" debate with a ten foot pole, but all you need to know is this:
There is NO REASON for a Dead Kennedys best of to be THIS SHORT!!! The band had way more than 12 good songs, and there is no reason for a DK best-of comp to be under 40 minutes. You not buying this helps get the message across that if the record companies wanna get our money for a DK best of, the least they can do is FILL THE DISC!

In reading about the back and forth legal battles between Biafra and Ray, it was really hard to tell who was at fault. Biafra was always one to lay it out there, but you never heard anything from the other side. Then this came out. This is a pathetic 'cash-in' attempt from the "new/old" DK that screams sell out. There is no point on releasing this waste of money for any other reason besides making money. If you have any respect for the Dead Kennedys, you would avoid this album like the plague, and copy the original albums from someone you know (like the back of the original cassette for In God We Trust INC. encourages you to do anyway).

Run for the Fall,
This review is from: Milking The Sacred Cow (Greatest Hits) (Audio CD)
The golden age of rock found major labels littering the marketplace with "greatest hits" packages, which just happened to include a live or unreleased studio cut or two to keep even the most casual fan plunking down cash for stuff they already had in their collection.
When the Jello Biafra-approved "Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" was released in 1987, the potential in this tired blueprint was demonstrated through the use of rarities and non-album cuts for a creative retrospective that appealed to all fans, while providing the band with a proper coda. It is unfortunate that this 12-track set - clocking in at under 40 minutes and with a pair of unreleased live numbers - appears to do more with product placement that was painless to produce, while buying the "new" group more touring time without having to enter the studio. There are no cuts from the final album - "Bedtime for Democracy" - though the one positive is the titles selected should be familiar enough with newer, casual fans who want a newer product to sample the landmark music that transcended the "punk" label. The title drips with irony, but the presentation circles the track in a lane that is worn out and tattered by past arena stars and industry-anointed supergroups.

to music contained, not bicker over the politics of why it came into existance. Something that you all managed to avoid completely.
Try to act like whether or not a person, like me, with mininal familiarity with DK would enjoy or find this collection of tracks interesting and why. As for me, I'm aware that is a collection of, excuse the term, popular tracks but haven't actual heard most of them. Try to impress me why I would benefit from purchasing this.

I, for one, am going to buy this CD. Jello Biafra had a "DK C'est Moi" haughty attitude for the shelf life of the Dead Kennedys, and bascially forced the rest of the band into taking a vow of poverty by tying them to his indy record label, Alternative Tentacles. The band could have done so much more business, but Jello didn't want to "sell out."
Now, all of a sudden, Jello is Mr. Capitalist Materialist Scrooge, bent on suing his former bandmates for daring to make a buck off their own music! Good for them, I say! How does it feel, Jello, to see someone else get some credit and spending cash for a change? His bandmates DESERVE those royalties Jello screwed them out of for years! |
