3.0 out of 5 stars Joakim - Milky Ways, October 26, 2011
This review is from: Milky Ways (Audio CD)
Joakim's third album, MILKY WAYS, goes even further into rock territory: "Back To Wilderness" has a tough drum beat and growling guitar that almost suggest black metal... until "Ad Me" takes him back to the disco. The atonal off-beat of "Fly Like An Apple" seems willfully jarring, even as it resolves in the chorus, while "Glossy Papers" has the trappings of a slow, pop song. The rawness of the synths on "Medusa" strums at indie-cred, even as its acid lines goes buck-wild. But "Love & Romance & A Special Person" gets back to the pure disco groove, even as the robotic voices try to come on to each other. "King Kong Is Dead" has some yawning steel pedal guitars in the mix, adding to the sense of spaciousness, and but it's "Spiders," probably the catchiest track on the album, that really revels in its space disco throb. It could almost be a Lindstrom track. Eclectic.
