Book Description

Rough Guides June 1, 1998
The definitive source to the millennium from the people who bring you the best guidebooks

As the year 2000 approaches, the world is gearing up for the biggest party of the century. How will it affect you? Where's the best place to party? And what does it all mean? Now in one handy package is everything you need to know about the coming millennium.

Part One explains the basics: where the sun will first rise on the new century, the intricacies of the Millennium Time Bomb, the meaning of pre-millennial angst.

Part Two is a guide to happenings around the world: celebrations and parties, pilgrimages and festivals, millennium projects and mega-events.

Part Three is a guide to the mushrooming subcultures of the millennial age: cults, visionaries, eco-prophets, futurists and UFO freaks, peace groups, doomsday sects, right-wing militias, and others with high expectations about what the year 2000 will bring.

This Rough Guide also features a history of millennium movements, details on travel packages, and a glossary of the best Web sites -- all in a pocket-size package at an unbeatable price.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Ushering in the year 2000 could be the biggest celebration in the history of humanity, and The Rough Guide to the Millennium is dedicated to helping you find just the right party. Thorough descriptions of each country's big events and succinct travel briefs make it an excellent traveler's starting point, while the information about controversies surrounding the planning of these events makes this tiny book a simply fascinating read. But whether you plan to cross oceans in search of the brave new world or intend to simply stay home, this guide's in-depth descriptions of the lore surrounding the millennium, answers to when and where the millennium will truly begin, and directory of the Internet's best millennium sites will make you entirely millennial-savvy. --Courtenay Kehn

4.0 out of 5 stars Where would you like to be?, July 31, 2000
As the year 2000 approaches, the world is gearing up for the biggest party of the century where would you like to be? Thousands of parties are being planned - tens of millions of dollars are being spent on fireworks alone for the moment the clock strikes twelve. Dawn ceremonies will flourish across the world and this wonderful pocket guide not only gives information on stimulating locations (by country, then city or site) for celebrating New Years 1999/2000 but has other informative sections that deal with FAQ regarding the millennium (countdown clocks, correct year, Y2K - the millennium time bomb?, etc.), list web sites, millennium tour groups, books and gives a short history of the millennium. Recommended.
