An adult guide to old school,
By Pat Kelly (Here, There & Everywhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Millennium Hip-Hop Party (Audio CD)
Twenty years after "Rapper's Delight", there are still a significant number of adults who do not feel that hip-hop is a legitimate musical form. The arguements are varied: "It all sounds the same", "It's just disgusting", "It has nothing to say", and my personal favorite "It's not REAL music."I seem to recall exactly the same arguments were raised about Rock 'n' Roll in the Fifties. To those who still espouse such views, I offer as contrary evidence, this fine compendium of some of the best Hip Hop of the last two decades. I'd recommend it over the first volume, and how rarely does a sequel surpass the original?, as it drops the novelty factor in so many early rap hits and concentrates on songs that truly hold up over time. Three tracks truly stand out. Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" is an elegant angry poem, closer to literature than to pop. Ignored in its day, it deserves it's place in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singles of All Time. Those of you who do not recognize the title may be familiar with the chorus: "It's like a jungle sometimes. It makes me wonder how I keep from going under." Every American schoolchild should be required to recite the entire text of the song, as a fable, a parable, a history and a lesson. Based on Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" track from the brilliant Songs in the Key of Life album, Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" covers similar ground. It was the #1 song of the year. The jazz/hip-hop fusion of Arrested Development should be enough to convert any remaining non-believer.

Millennium Hip Hop Makes There Best Mix,
By A Customer
This review is from: New Millennium Hip-Hop Party (Audio CD)
Every old school song on this cd is good. The Best song on this mix is by far "Ditty" by Paperboy. The song "OPP" brings alot color to the cd. I like how they put some 95 rap songs on the cd like "Gangstas Paradise" by Coolio. This CD also puts some more well known rappers in it Like Notorious BIG, MC Hammer, A Tribe Called Quest, Shaq, Naughty By Nature, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, and The Fresh Prince and alot of other great artist. I think that some of the songs are so-so like "Informer" by Snow, "You Be Illin" By Run DMC, and those in my opinion are Average songs. I think that it was good to put "Wild thing" on this cd cause it has a gutair beat in it so you dont get bored with the sounds of the beats and "People Everyday" is finally on a Hip Hop cd which is a great song. "Back To the Hotel" By N2Deep brings a hard bass into this cd. If You dont got this mix i think yall shoud buy it.

Hold Up One More Time!,
This review is from: New Millennium Hip-Hop Party (Audio CD)
Once again, where are the ladies on this album? This is a great release but they missed a lot of songs. How can you say this is a jam release when you forgot Domino's Ghetto Jam?, Today Was a Good Day by Ice Cube, My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me by Getto Boys, Call Me On the Under- D-Shot, Regulate- Warren G., Get Jiggy Wit It- Will Smith, Hurricane-The Click, Gin and Juice- Snoop. My Type of Hype- Full Force. Anything by Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim and P.Diddy. Come on! THESE WERE MAJOR HITS COMPLETELY MISSED! Whoever put this album together should have paid more attention because they missed a load of hits. And once again, forgot about the females. Why must the females always be ignored?
