2.0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING TRIVIA, POOR SONG SELECTION, April 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Millennium Series Volume 5 - The 1990s (Audio CD)
I first started collecting The Wherehouse Millennium Series when they came out in 1999 - the first month was music from the 50's, the second month from the 60's, and so on. I stopped collecting them past the 70's as I was disappointed with the song selection on the 70's CD. But - as my musical tastes have expanded and broadened over the years - I decided to complete my collection through Amazon.com.

One of the things I appreciated about each CD in the set - including this one - are the year-by-year description of significant events, pop culture and other trivia. They also explain how the musical styles evolved and were shaped during each decade - and they were able to do it in a simple, fold-out CD sleeve!

My beef is with their selection of music. The selection from the 50's CD was by far the best, followed by the 60's CD. The 70's were pretty good and the 80's were so-so, although there were a few songs I enjoyed. This 90's CD, however has - in my opinion - the weakest selection of music from the decade. There were maybe only 1 or 2 songs I enjoyed, but the rest I couldn't stand.

The CD is OK if you like rap, hip-hop, hard rock and other "scream-yell-and-mangle-your-instrument" music (which comprises about 3/4 of this CD) - and no disrespect to those who enjoy those genres of music - but what about the other musical styles of the decade? What about Pop, R&B or Country? Where are Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men and other artists who helped shape the decade? Why are they not included? Royalty issues?

If you want this CD to complete your collection of Millennium Series - and are interested in the facts and trivia of that decade - then go for it; otherwise, I would pass on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly what I expected, February 16, 2009

It's about what you expect - a fun mix of 1990s party/dance music. I wasn't expecting the lyrics to be edited for content, but I guess it's not the end of the world.
