4.0 out of 5 stars Whoa, there, sparky: Not EXACTLY a strategy collection!, August 21, 2001
This review is from: Millennium Mega Hits (CD-ROM)
This is a strategy/ACTION collection. You're gonna need some "twitching" to get you through "Duke Nukem 3D" and "Tomb Raider".

But, hey, at these prices, all you need is to like three games out of the five and you've gotten a good deal!

1. Civilization II: In some people's eyes, the greatest strategy game ever made. This irons out some interface issues from Civ I and presents the graphics a bit better--oh, and it's Windows-based, which means you don't have to worry too much about getting it to run on your Win9x system. (The original Civ was DOS-based and can act odd under Windows.)

2. Total Annihilation: Noteworthy for being an RTS that (along with Dark Reign) stood out amongst the flood of RTSes that followed Warcraft and Command and Conquer. The multi-player is said to be fabulous. One of the great computer game (musical) scores ever. A very similar experience, otherwise, to other games of the time, so getting this is more a matter of whether or not you invested a lot of time in old RTSes, and whether or not you want to invest more.

3. Tomb Raider: the first, the original (well, unless you want to go back to Prince of Persia), hands-down the best of the series. The graphics are extremely dated today; it really looks like a console game, with clipping errors and muddy textures making everything sort of look alike. The play is as good as it ever was--but if you don't like platform games, this isn't for you.

4. Duke Nukem: A great game in its day; very possibly the last time I spent any "quality time" with a first-person shooter (except for some recent Quake 3 multiplayer). A DOS game, though, which means some twiddling may be involved. I have =never= been able to get it to work under Win98.

5. Heavy Gear: The challenger to the "giant-robot" throne was not quite evolved at this point, most people agree. Heavy Gear II was much better received. They call this a "simulation" (of wearing a giant robot suit, I presume); it's an action game with strategic and tactical elements. I've never been able to get into the robot stuff for some reason, so I don't really have an opinion on this one.

For further info and guidance, check out the reviews of each individual item and the various bundles. Duke Nukem can be found in ...massive bundles of add-on levels on the like. Some offerings of "Tomb Raider" include all the games in the series. And so on!<P...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Strategy games!, December 14, 2000

This review is from: Millennium Mega Hits (CD-ROM)
Of course, any set of games that have a jewel like Civilization 2 in it HAS to be great. Duke Nukem a Classic fun to play and like no other. Tomb Raider the taste of playing a heard game, without it being hard to play, and the other two games, I don't even have the words to describe them. So if you are into classic games like I am, or just a beginner to Strategy/Role playing games. This is the pack for you!!
