Format: Audio CD
Between the cheesy band name and cover artwork, I had written German power metal warriors Metalium off as the poor man's Hammerfall, and hadn't really given them a fair chance. Metalium does have a certain degree of Manowar/Hammerfall "warriors for the glory of metal" in their songs, but it's the influence of bands like Primal Fear and Judas Priest that I hear the most of on these albums. This is fist-pumping, double bass drumming, headbanging heavy metal with great vocals, a good sense of melody and a better sense of power. The band sticks to the power metal formula, but they do it quite well.

The 2-disc 10 Years Jubilee Edition - Set 1 collection marks the band's tenth anniversary (obviously) and features two complete Metalium albums - 1999's Millennium Metal: Chapter One and 2000's State of Triumph: Chapter Two. Both albums have been remastered, and they each feature a pair of bonus tracks (live versions of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" and "Dream of Doom" for Millennium Metal and live versions of "Prophecy" and "Eye of the Storm" for State of Triumph). It's a nice upgrade for those who might already have the albums, and an even better deal for those who are unfamiliar with the band looking for a place to start. Between this and 10 Years Jubilee Edition - Set 2, you can get caught up on this overlooked power metal band without breaking the bank.
