4.0 out of 5 stars A great book on indigenous peoples., May 5, 2000

This review is from: Millennium: Tribal Wisdom & the Modern World (Hardcover)
I'm not quite finished reading it, but I have found it to be interesting, intelligent, informative, and very readable. I think the issue it brings up -- what we have to learn from tribal peoples -- is a much more important one than most people realize. The book _Ishmael_ is all about that question, and I would recommend either to anyone who's ever asked that question themselves.

The author lived with his family in a tribe for a long time and was accepted as part of the tribe. He tells stories of the tribe's friendliness and hospitality, their bizarre (to us) rituals, and their close social ties. He weaves in comparisons with many other tribal peoples, like American Indians, and other cultures. From his experience and knowledge he tries to articulate the differences between our society and tribal societies, and to point out things we could learn from them, yet never succumbs to "noble savage" stereotypes or idealizes the tribal life.
