Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Vikings sail far west." "Fierce fighting rocks capital of Aztecs." "Fire devastates London." "Horseless carriage frightens the cattle." "Clinton survives impeachment." The Millennium Year by Year tells the history of the last thousand years in the form of modern newspaper articles. The articles cover everything from military history, political changes, and scientific discoveries to cultural milestones and obituary notices. For example, headlines from 1949 include: "Russians have the atomic bomb," "Pauling describes sickle cell anaemia," "Orwell's book foresees a grim 1984," "China establishes People's Republic," and "Actor Ronald Reagan earns more than the U.S. president."

This lavishly illustrated book is difficult to put down--not surprising, when each turn of the page reveals gems like "Glass discs offer new eyes for old," "Bavarian sells brown jeans to U.S. miners," and "Black powder is changing warfare" ("A black powder invented in China is likely to revolutionise the nature of warfare for ever"). Some of the choices are odd; it's unlikely that an artist who had sold only one painting would be remembered in the newspapers: "Van Gogh, beset by gloom, kills himself" ("one day his mystical and original art may become fashionable, although it seems unlikely today"). That said, The Millennium Year by Year is a beautiful book, perfect for browsing, that will thrill any history buff. --Sunny Delaney

4.0 out of 5 stars What a great gift!, November 23, 1999

Here is a great book to commemorate the coming of the millennium...a retro view of the last 1000 years! This book is laid out in a newspaper format...very easy to read, and entertaining. It is a great coffee table book for the person who has everything, or for someone who enjoys looking back to times gone by. This is not just a book you would sit down and read...digesting it in snippets is the best. That also makes it last longer!

4.0 out of 5 stars To keep it in stock...., January 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Millennium Year By Year: A Chronicle of World History from AD 1000 to the Present Day (Hardcover)
I first saw this book on Amazon.com looking for a gift for a friend of mine who was a history nut. I bought it for her. I also bought one for my friend who is a Spanish teacher. To quote her, "Thank you so much for the book. It was the hit of Christmas! Everyone wanted to read it!" I told my mom what I got a few friends from online, then she said she wanted one.

So I actually went out to the store and looked at it. The newspaper format, in color, year-by-year, ranginging from 4 years compiled together in the beginning to two pages or more for the 1900's was easy to read and enjoyable. You know how everyone goes to the year that they were born? Well, that is what my mom did when I bought her one for Christmas too!

Enjoy it. Keep it in stock! (I noticed when I first bought it it was only available 2-3 days from Amazon.com. I thought my friend would get it by the New Year. Well, she got it by Christmas (and I only paid for 3-6 day UPS)! It was one of my GOOD experiences with Amazon.com. And, now it says it is available within 24 hours. Good Job Amazon.com!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Most engaging history book!, January 25, 2002
Each page reads like the each year's top headline news, complete with colorful illustrations and photos that bring to life historical events starting in year 1000 A.D.

Very informative, and pulls you in to keep reading about people, places, art, medical and technological breakthroughs, wars, coalitions, etc.

Short news articles for easy reading. Any budding student of history will find this to be an excellent resource to learn about world history.

Anyone who looks through these pages will gain more appreciation for the contributions, achievements and sacrifices of earlier generations, as well as the extreme conditions in which they lived. One also becomes more aware of how barbaric wars were waged by leaders propelled by power and greed.

As we witness events that unfurled following the tragedy of the attack on the World Trade Center's twin towers, this book helps explain what prompted the Bin Ladens of the world to wreak such destruction.

Yet, there is a wonderful balance of the beauty of what man has created, evidenced by the near-frenzy of building cathedrals, the incredible works of art one may not even see again, and other examples of the magnificence of the creative and inspired spirit.

Excellent addition to any library, or for coffee table book browsing.
