4.0 out of 5 stars What a great gift!
Here is a great book to commemorate the coming of the millennium...a retro view of the last 1000 years! This book is laid out in a newspaper format...very easy to read, and entertaining. It is a great coffee table book for the person who has everything, or for someone who enjoys looking back to times gone by. This is not just a book you would sit down and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Overview of history
From a mainstream point of view. However it is far too Euro-centric to be considered a truly "global" history. This book would receive a higher rating from me if it had said it was a "Western" or "European" chronicle of history but in general it left far too much out of the non-European world. Constant attention was also focused on the "important" people: kings, queens,...

4.0 out of 5 stars To keep it in stock...., January 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Millennium Year By Year: A Chronicle of World History from AD 1000 to the Present Day (Hardcover)
I first saw this book on Amazon.com looking for a gift for a friend of mine who was a history nut. I bought it for her. I also bought one for my friend who is a Spanish teacher. To quote her, "Thank you so much for the book. It was the hit of Christmas! Everyone wanted to read it!" I told my mom what I got a few friends from online, then she said she wanted one.

So I actually went out to the store and looked at it. The newspaper format, in color, year-by-year, ranginging from 4 years compiled together in the beginning to two pages or more for the 1900's was easy to read and enjoyable. You know how everyone goes to the year that they were born? Well, that is what my mom did when I bought her one for Christmas too!

Enjoy it. Keep it in stock! (I noticed when I first bought it it was only available 2-3 days from Amazon.com. I thought my friend would get it by the New Year. Well, she got it by Christmas (and I only paid for 3-6 day UPS)! It was one of my GOOD experiences with Amazon.com. And, now it says it is available within 24 hours. Good Job Amazon.com!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Most engaging history book!, January 25, 2002
Each page reads like the each year's top headline news, complete with colorful illustrations and photos that bring to life historical events starting in year 1000 A.D.

Very informative, and pulls you in to keep reading about people, places, art, medical and technological breakthroughs, wars, coalitions, etc.

Short news articles for easy reading. Any budding student of history will find this to be an excellent resource to learn about world history.

Anyone who looks through these pages will gain more appreciation for the contributions, achievements and sacrifices of earlier generations, as well as the extreme conditions in which they lived. One also becomes more aware of how barbaric wars were waged by leaders propelled by power and greed.

As we witness events that unfurled following the tragedy of the attack on the World Trade Center's twin towers, this book helps explain what prompted the Bin Ladens of the world to wreak such destruction.

Yet, there is a wonderful balance of the beauty of what man has created, evidenced by the near-frenzy of building cathedrals, the incredible works of art one may not even see again, and other examples of the magnificence of the creative and inspired spirit.

Excellent addition to any library, or for coffee table book browsing.

This book would receive a higher rating from me if it had said it was a "Western" or "European" chronicle of history but in general it left far too much out of the non-European world. Constant attention was also focused on the "important" people: kings, queens, nobles and what not. I would have preferred to have seen more focus on everyday people and some small snippets on what the life of average, common people were like.

All in all, a decent Euro-centric history book with nice layout, design and photos (hence the 3 stars, really 2.5 but since I cannot do that I decided to be generous) If you want a very basic look at mainstream Western history then this will do; if you are looking for something deeper or more global-oriented then you might be a bit disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun & Easy to Read History, July 24, 2011
By
John D. Dooley "PhiloX" (Southern California United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really enjoy this book (present tense but past tense is also included). I pick it up when I have nothing to do or want to rest my mind with basic facts. The book starts at 1000 AD & goes to the end of 1999 AD with the last page being the 2000 celebrations around the world. The "Real Fact" is that 2001 is the new Millennium, but don't tell that to the world & ruin their party. The first page starts with the years 1000 to 1014 but by the 20th century it goes year by year. Written like a newspaper with a general outline on the left side of each page opening. Read one negative review that is correct in stating that this is not a serious history book, but hey, take it easy, relax with some herbal tea & enjoy the human story (His-story).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and fun way to read about history, August 2, 2009
This is a great way to look at history, not only allowing adults to remember the most interesting things that happened in any given year of their lives, but also seeing what was happening in different parts of the world in any of the last 1000 years. I love it, my wife loves it, my 15 year-old son loves it, and I am buying one for a friend as a gift.

This review is from: Millennium Year By Year: A Chronicle of World History from AD 1000 to the Present Day (Hardcover)
This is a fancinating book. Each year in the last 1000 years is presented in color layout that looks like the headlines of a newpaper. It is a wonderful way to enjoy history! I purchased this book for my Dad for Christmas and my husband loved it so much that now I am buying one for him

4.0 out of 5 stars Savor History., December 29, 1999

This review is from: Millennium Year By Year: A Chronicle of World History from AD 1000 to the Present Day (Hardcover)
How better to look back over 1,000 years than to settle down with Millennium Year By Year's interesting and entertaining selections that can be read in short time slots. A primer to past events. Selected stories will surely send readers seeking more knowledge to related books that offer greater depth of the subject matter. If the past is your thing, I suggest also reading lesser known LIFE WITH NOAH. The book is a keeper -- a nice repast from the documented political history of the last millennium. Thoughtout time interesting characters have often sought isolation from civilization for a variety of reasons. Of all so-called hermits, Noah John Rondeau had a magnetic attraction that drew hundreds of people to seek out his isolated diggings along the Cold River in the Adirondacks, the earth's most ancient mountain range. Readers don't need to be outdoors' minded to enjoy nature and to experience what life was like far from the cookie jar. An abundance of vintage photographs enhance an already good read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, light reading, December 9, 1999

This review is from: Millennium Year By Year: A Chronicle of World History from AD 1000 to the Present Day (Hardcover)
In short-history written in a creative style, but not for serious students of history (i.e. Columbus din't 'prove' the world was round, everyone already knew that)
