The Auto-Set control automatically sets your welder to the proper parameters. It is available when welding mild steel with solid wire and only works with .024 and .030 solid wires and C25 shielding gas (75% Argon, 25% CO2).

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Blue does it again, April 25, 2010
After years of having to drag any of my welding needs to work, I finally plunked down and bought this unit 2 yrs ago. I'm a fan of Miller products from way back, having cut my welding teeth on a Syncrowave 250 multiprocess machine, and using all Miller products at work from light gauge galv. steel MIG welding (Shopmaster 300 from the 80's, 2 yr old ShopMate 300DX), to running straight SMAW stick welding with a couple of DialArc 250s that range to the late 60's, early 70's. And in my shop environment these things get beat to hell, and little if any repair work has been needed. Miller machines seem to last forever.

That said, this little 120 volt MIG welder has some serious guts to it. It's more than light enough to travel with, and being 120V it can be used almost anywhere. I regularly run it on a 15amp circuit with no problems.

The 20% duty cycle is overly cautious - this machine doesn't quit. Doesn't cut off, either, just keeps going. Welded the doors shut on a demo derby vehicle - nonstop welds. It's insane.

The M-10 gun is smaller but is perfect with this machine. I would probably replace the ground clamp with something a little heavier duty, but thus far it's been fine for my usage. The wire feed motor is a bit on the louder side, but has no problem pushing 0.030" wire at full speed off of a ten lb spool. Spool changes are quick, which is a good thing, I seem to alternate back and forth between 0.023" and 0.030 all the time.

I haven't really had an opportunity to run the Auto-Set as much as I'd like to comment on it. It seems to work well, but I rarely use this machine to weld equal thickness steels. Example - welding 3/16 wall tubing to auto body sheetmetal to replace rocker panels on an off road Jeep.

If you need to do any kind of welding at home, this machine is excellent. And you can get replacement parts (tips, nozzles) at just about any weld supply shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is nothing that comes close to this tool, January 6, 2009

I have had my Millermatic 140 unit for a little over a year now, and it gets used more than my much larger Miller 250 220 volt. I can weld as small as I want to 1/2".
It's rated for 3/16's.
But if you know what your doing, 1/2" is no big deal.
This guy can plow along like the baddest units out there.

You also need to go to welder supply to get bottled gas mix for it.
Not cheap, but there's no way around it unless your going with flux core.
Then you also need the electronic mask.
Grinders, clamps, safety equipment, safe storage high on a solid cart.

I always forget to make a video for items here.
So next project with this guy gets a video of 1/2" steel for those that have no clue.

5.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, October 29, 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Millermatic 140c w/ Auto-Set (Misc.)
I bought a Chicago Electric MIG welder and then this MIllermatic. Using them both side by side was a lesson in why you spend the good money on a great tool vs. a cheap one. The Chicago Electric (Harbor Freight) has two settings, Min and Max. But even at the Min setting I was blowing through 22 and 24 gauge sheet all the time. The feed control was fine, but at the higher setting it wasn't fast enough to create a bead. The splatter was terrible, leading to burst and sloppy welds. It was like trying to weld with two blunt ends of an extension cord.

The Millermatic is a dream. Controls for various thicknesses of material. Feed controls that keep up with whatever setting you need. Right out of the box I put a bead down between to pieces of 14 gauge tube. It was beautiful. Welded 24 gauge sheet with no burn through, not even a dimple.

Used flux core and gas/steel with both welders 0.030

Bottom line is you get what you pay for.
