Book Description

December 31, 2006 Miller's Ceramics Buyer's Guide
Miller’s makes sense of the dizzying array of collectable ceramics by providing a range of current sales prices and color photographs for more than 2,500 items, ranging from 16th century delftware through 19th century stoneware to post-war and modern pieces. Definitive text reveals the dimensions and creation date for each piece, along with manufacturers’ histories, and tips for ceramic restoration and care. Several sections are devoted to collecting by maker, by country of origin, and even by shape. Various styles and collectiblity of items from leading producers such as Staffordshire, Doulton, Sevres, Royal Copenhagen, and Meissen, among others, are discussed in detail, along with those of smaller manufacturers from Europe, the United States, and Russia.

About the Author

John Sandon has had an interest in porcelain from an early age, inherited from his father, Henry Sandon - another prominent figure in the antique ceramics world. John went to work at Phillips in London over twenty-five years ago and soon established himself as a porcelain specialist. He is now director of the international ceramics and glass departments at Bonhams. John has written a number of books on the subject, such as Miller's Collecting Porcelain, as well as articles for magazines such as BBC Homes and Antiques, and he is a contributor to the annual Miller's Antiques Price Guide. He is best known for his regular appearances as a porcelain expert on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

This review is from: Miller's Buyer's Guide: Ceramics (Miller's Ceramics Buyer's Guide) (Hardcover)
I am not a collector but prices are listed. I wanted a book that covered many countries, makers, periods, styles, and shapes. That is what I got. Every page is filled with COLOR photos- 6 to 8 to a page. They are large enough to see the details. I did not like books by the competitors with their black and white photos and lists. I wanted a reference work to go along with books that specialized in manufacturers or time periods. This book would give me a taste of what else was being produced. In looking at John Sandon's choices to display a manufacturer for whom I had a dedicated book, I thought he picked the right ones. I liked his Worcester section so much, I bought his book The Ewers-Tyne Collection. I have other books by him and they all seem to have more photos and style variety than his competitors.
