5.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh, "Millican"! An astonishingly good debut CD

3.0 out of 5 stars Hick Country with a TWIST!
This CD shows what promise this young band has. The songs are lively, fun, and very relevant to our time period! I have seen this band play numerous times in Key WEst, and am impressed by the crowd they draw. Listeners enjoyed the live version so much they HAD to buy the CD! I can remember within a week the guys were sold out of the CDS and had to have an emergancy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh, "Millican"! An astonishingly good debut CD, May 31, 2002

Early in 1999, a friend handed me this CD wrapped in a napkin and said, "I think you're gonna like this." LIKE it??? I fell deeply and hopelessly in love with Reckless Kelly before "Walton Love" ended, never figuring out if it was because RK had such a unique and fresh sound that fused elements of country and rock with some blues and alternative, or if it was the promise of their future (see "Live at Stubbs" and "The Day".)

"Millican's" songs seem deceptively simple. At first blush, "I Still Do" appears to be a sweet little love song; however, Cody's lilting fiddle and mandolin give a rich, distinctive texture that has become signature Reckless Kelly. Don't be fooled, tho - RK can rock with the best of them. Give a loud listen to "Baby's Gone Blues." That guitar intro can rattle your windows.

As with all original RK material, the lyrics and melodies are mature, tightly woven (no weak sisters here and even a chuckle or two in "Hey Say May" and "Time Bomb") and mighty damn danceable (it's an involuntary thing - go see RK live and you'll understand). Musicianship is solid and very, very clean. And the harmonies? Well, you just gotta hear Cody and Willy sing, with Chris covering the top end. You almost will feel how much fun they're having.

"Millican" will probably always be my favorite RK CD. One of my favorite CDs, period. If my copy had started out with grooves like the old albums, it would be smooth as glass today. "Millican" is a guaranteed good time on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who says country music sucks?, May 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Millican (Audio CD)
The best way to describe the music of Reckless Kelly is "a child of country and alternative." Or "hick rock" as the group likes to call it. And indeed it is. I was actually introduced to them by my father, and I loved it. RK is bridging the generation gap around here. My parents saw RK open for Robert Earl Keen a few months ago. My dad put it best when he said "These young guys got up on the stage and just cooked!" Not only do these guys cook, they cook it well done. In "Baby's Gone Blues" you can almost see the smoke coiling off the fiddle. The music rocks and the lyrics rule. So what if it's country? "Please excuse my hick music" I say as I give a fgirend a ride home. "Hey, this isn't bad," they say in the middle of "It's All Over." Now when ever I drive in the car and somebody is in a jeep blasting rap music. I just blare "Hey Say May," and drown that stuff out. If you've just been dumped, listen to Willy's insanely hilarious lyrics and RK's upbeat music and you'll be over it in no time. It's better than sitting there just waitin' on the blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite CD, February 28, 2000
By
This review is from: Millican (Audio CD)
I grew up in the same Idaho not to far from where some the band members are from. I originally just bought it cause it was cheap, and I knew that there were at least a few good songs on it. HOwever, it instantly became one of my favorite CDs and I had to buy another copy cause mine got destroyed and I couldn't go without their music. It is not just the same old country that plays on the radio, they have a unique sound that I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars THESE BPYS CAN PLAY!, February 1, 2000

Growing up in Texas, I got to a chance to see these boys open for Robert Earl Keen in NYC about a year ago...since then, I have traveled to TX and other places just to catch a song or two. You can like country - you can hate it - these boys are in an element all of their own. I have taken people from all over the world to see them - and no one has left upset. Everyone becomes a new fan! A MUST IN ANY MUSIC COLLECTION. Search online and find their other album (Live at STUBBS)...it is even better. But if you want to be in complete awe - SEE THEM LIVE. P.S. Check out their WebSite - they are coming to NYC 4/1/00 at The Mercury Lounge.

I just got turned onto this band because a whole bar in New Orleans was singing along with songs off this album playing through the stereo system. I went and bought it and am giving it my "Super Sweet" rating after thoroughly exhausting the CD Player in my car with it for the last week. You can't go wrong with this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Country Music Masquerade, December 21, 1999

It ain't the Osmonds (thank God), but its a little bit country, its a little bit rock and roll. I've seen Reckless Kelly several times live and found that they are one of my favorite live acts, the album does them tremendous justice. Reckless Kelly needs a new classification "For country music fans that like to rock, who coincidently have the blues" If you have Jerry Jeff, Robert Earl Keen, John Prine, etc. add this to your music library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Soulful, Energy-laden, Sexy Music, April 20, 2000

If you've ever spent an evening with close friends at a hole-in-the-wall of a music hall consuming drinks, laughing endlessly, and swaying to the band's music rolling off the stage in front of you, then this album is for you. I discovered this band by accident one evening, walking down 6th St. in Austin, TX. The sounds drew my friend and me inside, and I was hooked immediately. I've seen them live on several occasions, and they get better every time. The music is clean and crisp, their voices are rugged and earnest, and the lyrics are ones we can all relate to...this CD is a must have. It captures the energy and sound of Reckless Kelly as they are live. Fabulous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, June 8, 2000
By
This review is from: Millican (Audio CD)
Very well put together album - country\rock at its finest. Catchy tunes all the way through, it's one of those CD's that can be listened to front to back without pause. Additionally, for those of us that have recently had to deal with pain caused by a women, this album has special meaning. To the reviewer reffering to a bar full of people in New Orleans singing along to it, I think I was one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boys, May 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Millican (Audio CD)
This album is just pure Texas fun. For the first couple of months after I bought the CD, it was the only one I listened to. Also, after having seen Reckless Kelly live almost a dozen times, I would recommend their other album - Live at Stubb's. Go see these guys live if you get the chance!
