5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I bought this book because I like pretty things and the covered called to me off the shelf. That's fortunate for me because I read it in one sitting, finishing at four in the morning!

I've read a few chick lit books before to know that this is a genre that I should probably avoid, although there has been the occasional gems like The Devil Wears Prada (actually better as a movie as the book features the biggest turn off to these types of stories--the whining twenty something girl) So from this perspective, what I liked about the book was the main...

I bought this book because I like pretty things and the covered called to me off the shelf. That's fortunate for me because I read it in one sitting, finishing at four in the morning!

Anyways, I always find it annoying when I can't find a synopsis of the book on Amazon, so here's what it says on the backcover:

When Millie Brady saves Orla Hart's life she doesn't realise how dreastically it will change her own - not least because the boyfriend who is asking her to move in with him at the time promptly storms off in a huff.

Actually, Millie's relieved. She's quite happy to enjoy a restfull man-free summer in Cornwall. But bestselling novelist Orla has other ideas. She's determined - for her own reasons - that Millie should meet the man of her dreams.

Dropped wallets, roller-skating gorillagrams, the world's most flirtatious boss and a helicopter in the back garden all conspire to produce a summer neither Millie - nor Orla - will ever forget.

With a great cast of characters and Jill Mansell's quirky humour, this book is a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars pretty cover....., February 7, 2010

This review is from: Millie's Fling (Paperback)
okay okay... i admit it. i was browsing for books and i picked this one up because the cover was really pretty. then i read the back and i was like.. ooh! AND it's based in england! i LOVE british chick lit! why have i never heard about this author before????? I'm so glad for the pretty cover, because now i found my new favorite author. Mansell has a way of creating these characters that you can identify with and fall in love with. I love that about this book. Millie seemed like someone i could be friends with.

I normally don't like books with too many characters because it can get too confusing, but Mansell brings them all to life beautifully. Her humor is pretty on point too.

Pick this book up for a fun, light, beach read. I'll definitely be checking out her other books.

I got this book because it was free and at best seemed mildly interesting. What I expected was a somewhat boring read that would have flimsy character plots, but what I got was an extremely well thought out story line with characters that evolved. I really enjoyed this book a lot and the comedic quirky events that we all have experienced in our own lives feeling like that person that says "god, why does this always have to happen to me!" I really started to actually feel for the characters in the book and relate. The first part of the book I had some what a difficult time getting through because I was so determined to not like this book, but it quickly started to grow on me and soon I found myself not being able to put it down. Such a great nab for being a free book!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars more a fling than a romance, January 10, 2011

I've read a few chick lit books before to know that this is a genre that I should probably avoid, although there has been the occasional gems like The Devil Wears Prada (actually better as a movie as the book features the biggest turn off to these types of stories--the whining twenty something girl) So from this perspective, what I liked about the book was the main character, Millie was sweet and kind and not as self absorbed as many of these heroines tend to be. I didn't care for her best friend Hester at all who came across as a self centered dolt throughout the book. She whines about her boyfriend who moves to get a better chef position, her mad crush on a man who is not interested her, her desire to cheat, her weight gain--I found her tiresome.

Other good points about the book are the portrayal of some of the side characters Like Millie's parents & the various men that Millie interacts with. I liked the character of Lucas who would have some potential as a lead in another story. Some of the scenes showing Millie in her new job & her various dates were humorous.

On the more negative side, the main hero's character could have been fleshed out more. Two serious situations/topic was treated in a very off hand way. It could be because this is a British style book and they tend to have that stiff upper lip thing going for them. This book also had some very abrupt transitions from one scene to the other. One moment you're with one character & you're waiting to see what happens next & the next you're in a completely different unconnected scene. Most writers would separate these scenes by chapters.

If you're fan of a Bridget Jones style chick lit book, then you'll probably enjoy this book. If you're not a fan of the genre, then this book would probably not convert you.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Jill Mansell Book, March 30, 2011

I'm not really a fan of romance novels, but the blurb sounded good and I decided to get it for my Kindle. Bad move, since I bought it late in the evening and just had to take a peek before bed. I finished it before I went to sleep that night!

The writing is fresh and clever. Millie is sweet, funny and the kind of girl I'd like for my best chum. Her romantic troubles are the kind I can relate to and the plot was believeable. The heroine wasn't drop dead gorgeous or fabulously wealthy...in fact, she works doing "Kissograms." The men -- surprisingly for this genre -- were real people. Even the "cad" turned out to be a good guy.

I highly recommend this for a way to kill a rainy weekend. Just make sure you start it earlier in the day than I did! LOL

This one of the first books by the author I have read. I absolutely loved it, I stayed up all night reading it, laughing and thinking, oh no, how could that happen! It was sweet and lovely and gave you a good feeling at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, April 1, 2011

I really enjoyed this book. I got some strange looks in the waiting room at the doctor's office when I started laughing out loud at all the funny things that happen, the mud wrap scene was hilarious. It was fun, entertaining, and I fell in love with Lucas.

I got this book as a freebie on my kindle. I'm glad I did. This is my first book by Jill Mansell and I will definately be reading more. This was a great chick lit book. I was hooked from the beginning. It kinda had a bridget jones feel too it. This book has little humor and a little romance, the perfect blend.

I loved this booked, I downloaded it whilst it was FREE without even reading the description. I was surprised and pleased to see it was an English Novel. It was a quick and easy chick read... with a happy ending. I plan to read more by Jill Mansell.
