5.0 out of 5 stars As Good as it Gets for Someone Like Me
This is an excellent resource for someone like me, who knows absolutely nothing about investment. You could call this "investing for dummies" but without the cutsie, condescending attitude of those kind of books, and with actually quite a lot more depth. That, I think, is the real strength of this book, its depth. You can use it as a powerful intro primer...

I have to admit this book was pretty lame. A lot of common sense, pretty charts and diagrams, but overall pretty shallow. Seems to be a poor compilation of material better covered elsewhere. Get's kinda preachy over a WRITTEN financial plan. I don't necessarily agree. Seems to answer most people's financial problems by saying, "Cut your expenses to the bone,...

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good as it Gets for Someone Like Me, April 27, 2000
This review is from: Million Dollar Car & $250,000 Pizza (Paperback)
This is an excellent resource for someone like me, who knows absolutely nothing about investment. You could call this "investing for dummies" but without the cutsie, condescending attitude of those kind of books, and with actually quite a lot more depth. That, I think, is the real strength of this book, its depth. You can use it as a powerful intro primer on investing (the perfect gift for a teenager or young couple) and you can use it to look deeper and learn a LOT more about something that is extremely important to all of us.

I think the most important thing about this book is how the humanity and decency of the author shines thru. The "greed is good" guys rightfully scare the daylights out of most of us, and to see someone functioning with an obvious level of integrity makes the book almost like having your dad or mom, (who just happens to be one of the leading experts in investing) available to give you advice on how to get rich without selling your soul.

Allyson writes a very practical book about financial planning that is very educational and helpful. I've recommended this book to engaged couples, college graduates, and my collegues. It is a great resource for understanding your personal finances. As Allyson says: "Your finances are your responsiblity." The more you know the better you are in planning for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Car and $250,000 Pizza, June 16, 2000

I have recommended Allyson Lewis's book to several of my collegues and have encourage them to share or purchase a copy of it for their kids in Graduate School, College, as well as High School. This book is a roadmap for a successful financial future.

Allyson Lewis clearly demonstrates general and complex financial planning strategies via story telling. A most effective way to deliver her message- This is a text on how to build wealth and see the true value in the hard earned dollars we all take home each pay period.

I was about to play catch-up with "The Jones Family" when I read your thoughtful words and know in 5 years time I'll have an extra $75k in my investment portfolio! Thanks for the sound advice- it could not have come at a better time.

I have to admit this book was pretty lame. A lot of common sense, pretty charts and diagrams, but overall pretty shallow. Seems to be a poor compilation of material better covered elsewhere. Get's kinda preachy over a WRITTEN financial plan. I don't necessarily agree. Seems to answer most people's financial problems by saying, "Cut your expenses to the bone, deprive yourself and your family for a brief 25 years, save your money, get an 8% annual return and you'll be financially set someday. And if you're not saving enough, just cut more out of your budget!" Naive. Far better treatment of the material in "Richest Man in Babylon". Also, Mary Hunt's "Debt Proof Living" gives real practical "how-to's" as opposed to this drivel. On the flip side, there is a little merit to this book if you can discover some of the better nuggets of wisdom amidst the fluff. Pass.

For the young person who is just starting out on a life of investing, Allyson Lewis spells out the steps with such clarity, it would be simple to create an investment plan and be confident with that plan. For the older person, like myself, she explains how to evaluate and protect our investments. She provides all of the figures and tables to support everything she says. The case studies are particularly interesting since the financial strategies for people of all ages are discussed and analyzed. It is the most comprehensive and easy to read book on investing that I have read.

I give this easy to read, informative financial book a "thumbs up!" Allyson Lewis, the author, has written a book that makes one realize that they too can achieve financial security if they are committed to doing so. Lewis also provides "success" stories that make the book more personal than normal financial books. One can tell that Lewis is good at what she does as a finacial planner & wants to use her expertise to help others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK..., March 30, 2000
By
David (The Palm Beaches) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Million Dollar Car & $250,000 Pizza (Paperback)
I think the highlight of this book was the idea of coming up with a written financial plan and a family financial mission statement. The book also makes it clear that our financial choices are what can make or break our plans. The book correctly states that the less money you earn, the more urgent the need for good planning. Lower income people can't count on a big paycheck to bail themselves out of poor financial decisions.

I rate the book a "3" because it wasn't as coherent, simple and entertaining as my four current favorites in the financial planning genre: "Richest Man in Babylon", "Neatest Little Guide to Personal Finance", "Getting Rich in America" or "Wealth in a Decade". All the same, its worth the time to browse through it.

Allyson Lewis' gives sound investment advise in terms that the least to the most sophisticated investor can relate. Planning is the key! Creating your financial plan can begin at any age. She uses real-life antedotes from her clients and peers that conveys that anyone can reach their financial goals by writing them down, and developing a strategy and a well-thought out plan to reach them. A must buy for those who are experiencing major changes in their life: newlyweds, college grads, pre-retirement, grandparents. etc.
