5.0 out of 5 stars A well deserved homage to Anette Kellerman!
Esther Williams was lovable and irresistible in this film but if you add the presence of Busby Berkeley, the talented Mervin Le Roy, a very human and extremely imaginative Mature and the presence of that giant actor as Walter Pigdeon was, you will obtain a very worthy movie without major pretensions.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
This is a cheap made in asia transfer to DVD, certainly not worth the price. Advertised subtittles are not included.

I wonder if MGM is aware of that release and if their copyrights were properly protected.

I would suggest that Amazon take this item off their catalog.

Conclusion: don't get fooled, don't buy!

The sublime sequences of the aquatic ballet and choreographic numbers are superb and belong to the cinema mythology.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Esther Williams Classic., March 17, 2007

It's great to be able to finally own a DVD of this picture. As it had been a while since I had watched it, I forgot that it really did not have many underwater shots (except for the tank scene) - most consisted of dives and water ballet taken from the surface. The big water-show scene the film is famous for is indeed magnificent! Way over the top- it makes an impression every time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Mermaid, June 21, 2008

Esther Williams is such a delight. I love her films. While visiting my uncle a few years back, he shared several of them with me. If you enjoy music, humor, love, and life in general- check it out. The show tunes are fabulous and the color version is really neat.

You will be pleasantly surprised by this classic film. It is one of my favorite amazon purchases. No matter what age you are- It is a must see movie event. Watch all of her films - they are wonderful.

With the exception of "Chicago", "Dreamgirls" and "Slumdog", there is a reason why musicals are not popular and pale today to those of "yester year". They were made predominantly as lite but grand entertainment for "war time diversion". Well the time is again now...but the quality/talent just ain't there anymore for a re-surgance.

While the person I got this for had wanted it but bought it on their own already, they stated this copy was better and less costly than the one they had purchased.

I bought this DVD because I had seen scenes from it in "That's Entertainment", and have purchased other MGM releases of Esther Williams films, which look great on my plasma tv. This DVD appears to be a total knock-off, taken from a VHS tape. Not only are there no extras - not even an index of scenes - but the picture quality is very "second (or third) generation", with dull, murkey, lack-of colors, and undefined details, even on my upconverting DVD player, which makes most movies look really good. To top it all off, my copy gets stuck, about twenty minutes into the movie, and only reads as occasional still photos, with the soundtrack underneath - completely unwatchable. To be fair, the seller was totally cooperative when I notified him of my dissatisfaction. He issued me a complete credit within a couple of days, and did not require me to return the product to him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read the worst review first!, February 26, 2009
This review is from: Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) (DVD)
Love old Esther Williams movies, and this one is a classic...BUT the quality of the DVD reproduction was awful. It was obviously cheaply produced--perhaps even filmed directly from a movie screen with old "film streaks and bubbles", blurry and not the usual DVD features or quality. This was the only DVD listing foor this movie title; if there were another alternative seller for this movie, I'd choose it. If you just want this title anyway, just be forewarned that the quality is very poor.

The movie came in good condition and prompt! The only thing that disappointed me was the story of the movie... it was "good" but not "great".
