My new favorite muscle car book!,
By GasTiresOil (Bristol, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Million-Dollar Muscle Cars: The Rarest and Most Collectible Cars of the Performance Era (Hardcover)
I was very skeptical that yet another new muscle car book could actually offer anything that I hadn't read a thousand times before. But for $22 bucks I figured at minimum I'd have a new coffee table book with nice pictures.
I am happy to say this book is far more than a pretty picture book. Honestly, I was shocked Comer gives so much history on each individual car including who owned it, what they paid, when they sold it and even how much they sold for. The legwork in getting this info had to be a real labor of love, and something I've never seen anybody do before. And this isn't some fairy tale book that wants us to believe all muscle cars are great just because they are expensive. Much like another book I love, Joe Oldham's Musclecar Confidential, Comer tells it like it is. I was hooked when I read the fourth sentence in the book - "These rattle trap, bare bones, crude devices were built to conform to a price point with little regard given to sophistication or longevity, and aimed squarely at the youth market." I had never thought about it before, but that really summed up the whole muscle car era. It was about money for the manufacturers then and it seems to be about the money now. All I can say is if you are a muscle car junkie like me I'm sure you'll have a hard time putting this book down. I had heard rumors of these crazy sales for big bucks, and I knew about a few of the cars. But outside of watching 60 seconds of coverage on a few cars on TV from Barrett-Jackson, I never knew the rest of the story. I learned a lot about the secret world of upper end car deals, and it was cool to follow these cars through and read how they sold for almost nothing only to later sell for a ton. Really cool stuff. I highly recommend this book to anybody that loves cars, or even just has a passing interest in them. The stories are so interesting that you'll find yourself not even paying attention to the car itself but more the owners and how these cars made it through. Heck, I liked it so much I just came back to buy 4 more to give as X-Mas gifts!

Elegance in the fast lane.,

This review is from: Million-Dollar Muscle Cars: The Rarest and Most Collectible Cars of the Performance Era (Hardcover)
For anyone who has felt the increase in one's pulse rate at the sound of a muscle car coming near, or felt the unique sensation in the presence of the inchoate power of a muscle car from the 60s as one embraces its steering wheel, this epistle communicates a true sense of knowledge of those feelings. Colin Comer can write well, as is obvious, but more importantly he feels the psychic sense of his subject and can elicit from his readers an acknowledgement of that which is not usually susceptible to words. Many will not understand the intimacy of which i speak but for those of us who grew up in the locus of the subject of Colin's book they will know - Colin has captured the essence; Colin has captured the elegance of the era.

Most informative automotive history I've read yet,
By Rider Boy (Regina, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Million-Dollar Muscle Cars: The Rarest and Most Collectible Cars of the Performance Era (Hardcover)
I've been reading about muscle cars since back when the only literature on the subject consisted of repair manuals, and believe this to be one of the very best of the breed. I've owned a number of muscle cars and know a bit about the market, but nothing like what author Colin Comer knows about the subject. He knows every detail about the cars themselves, about the market for the cars, and about the cars places in history, the reasons why these cars have become so valuable. Best of all, the guy can write. The text was as entertaining as it was informative. The photography was as good as the text. I own maybe 20 books with David Newhardt's photography and this is easily his best work yet.

The author's personal experiences and those who own these awesome cars adds volumes to the appreciation of the marques, models and even the era they hail from. To illustrate, I am "into" cars and drive a 1968 GT Mustang California Special everyday (not qualifying as a million-dollar car just yet) yet most of my friends and family are not "car people". Since leaving this book in the lounge I've found many people, those you would least expect, engrossed in the tales of these truly legendary cars. This book bridges the divide with universal appeal. Scary to think that it will probably introduce more filthy rich to the collector car market... next edition: billion dollar cars!

How refreshing it was to finally read a muscle car book where the author lives and breathes the stuff and the book is not filled with factual errors. The book reads effortlessly and without really knowing it your educated on the history of the cars as well as the current market for significant cars. This book is muscle car 101 for anyone considering the purchase of a muscle car. Must read for anyone who calls himself a car guy.

Finally an insightful and fun muscle car book to savor,
This review is from: Million-Dollar Muscle Cars: The Rarest and Most Collectible Cars of the Performance Era (Hardcover)
At last a muscle car book written by a true car guy, actual collector and muscle car lover instead of a hired gun who writes about whatever car the publisher tells him or her to write about. This author lives and breathes muscle cars and it shows in the writing. Funny insighful and packed with real world experiences and stories from a guy on the front lines on the muscle car era/ Plus as a bonus the author has his finger on the pulse of the market and gives real world honest insight on up and coming cars as wellas the truly significant ones. Must read for anyone who loves muscle cars.

I like muscle car but am hardly a fanatic, so it was a surprise to find this book so fascinating. The writing caught the excitement of the 1960's, and the speed that was part of "coming of age".
The research of each car is outstanding. Who knew there was so much to learn? Each history is a unique story. Colin Comer is a great writer, it is obvious that he loves the cars. The pictures are terrific, the cars are gorgeous. I recommend Million Dollar Muscle Cars with confidence that anyone will enjoy reading this book!

Simply put, this is the most well written & photographed book on muscle cars I have ever seen. I own many "coffee table" car books with beautiful pictures, but, they usually fall short when it comes to information on the cars themselves. The valuable information and insight that the author provides is what sets this book apart from the rest. It's a great value, and, certainly a better investment than buying a bunch of the weak car magazines that abound today.

I bought this book for my boyfriend's father because he loves muscle cars, and he loved this book, it had all his favorites in it and he just really enjoyed reading about how the cars were made, how they came up with the models, etc. Great buy for a sports car lover!

Muscle Cars are a legendary historical illustrated look at the first baby boomers of street racing!,

This review is from: Million-Dollar Muscle Cars: The Rarest and Most Collectible Cars of the Performance Era (Hardcover)
Million Dollar Muscle Cars is an illustrated look at the history of baby boomers the first cars they were fierce and fast for the street. This period was the 60's and 70's when cars were legends made to race as well as used for in the street. The rare models that survived this onslaught are rare collectables nostalgia in steel and rubber. Colin Comer is the world's expert muscle car dealer David Newhardt is one of the best automobile photographers today together they have created a book of legends that almost mythological in significance is nonetheless a true masterpiece of it,s time and era. This book retells the story of these cars from their rise in the 60's to their decline today and re-emergance as performance icons with immense historical significance for collectors. Now all together in their own separate page or section they stand alone in pride and coolness as marques of animals which have a signifigant place in history as collectible motor vehicles for driving in cruising or racing.
These cars were not for the faint of heart to buyers they were high-performance cars more adept at competition in racing than in transportation of going from one place to another. Baby boomers did just that in using these cars for drag and street racing, which were the initiators of a legend that continues today in racing which may sound shrouded in myth but is very much a reality to people who drive these cars that demand attention and respect like thoroughbred ponys on the loose in a grassfield. An informative book, with incredible illustrations and photography, that is to be owned and respected by any muscle car enthusiast,or driver of the vehicles which in the end are of course symbols of wild animals! |
