Excellent as usual,
By Donovan's mom "ML" (The great midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Million Little Mistakes (Hardcover)
What I love about Heather's "mistakes" books is that one can spend 10 minutes on a particular drama and put the book down, only to pick it up a day later and try out another situation and come up with a completely different outcome. Compared to other readers, I seem to pick safer choices, and have died less frequently than I did in "Pretty Little Mistakes," although I also ended up as a mushroom in one of my forays into this book. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Heather McElhatton must be delightfully deranged! For only a crazy person could have created such a bizarrely entertaining set of circumstances! What can I say - I've finished about half of the storylines, and without giving too much away, I'll tell you that I've been blown up, lived the life of an American aristocrat, and become a sort-of modern day Ma Barker - just to name a few outcomes.
The lives you can live in Million Little Mistakes range from the extravagant and whimsical to the ludicrouss and demented - basically, this book is fantastic! You may remember that I read McElhatton's first do-over novel, Pretty Little Mistakes, a few weeks ago and loved it. I really didn't think she could have come up with even more and better scenarios for Million Little Mistakes, but she has certainly topped herself here. Million Little Mistakes is a little different from Pretty Little Mistakes in that every storyline doesn't end in your death. Don't get me wrong, there are some casualties contained within the pages, but do not fear the reaper - sometimes the end is left entirely up to your imagination. As someone who enjoyed surrendering her many lives in Pretty Little Mistakes, the stories that I most relished in Million Little Mistakes ended in death. McElhatton's creativity is brilliantly illustrated in her descriptions of the diverse afterlives of people. One of my favorites so far is one where the dead are in a train station, and everyone has 30 seconds to board the train for their next life. The author quips, "No wonder people pick crappy lives; they hardly have time to pick at all." I love it! Million Little Mistakes is a fun and witty read with a little something for everyone. Hilarious and captivating, you will not be able to stop reading. As for me, I'm going back in to change everything. There's really no telling where my choices will take me this time, but I can't wait to find out!

Great book, but TERRIBLE E-BOOK,

I loved Pretty Little Mistakes, and Million Little Mistakes did not disappoint me. What did disappoint me is that it is not well formatted at all for Kindle (or in my case, an ipad). I am sorry that I didn't just get this one as a physical book. It was tedious and frustrating having to go back and forth to the table of contents every few pages. The fact that I did this attests to the quality of the book itself.

I don't often take the time to write a review for items I purchase. However, there are two reasons why I decided to express my opinion of Million Little Mistakes. 1) The book is great. Heather created a fun and colorful adventure book for women. The choices and decisions she writes are creative and unique. You can re-read this book dozens of times, always ending with a different fate. You go through this book making decisions, not always good one, which always lead you to an interesting outcome. I highly recommend this book. 2) Walter the Pug. Google him. Heather, through her blog, has shown how kind and dedicated she is to her pug Walter, and to me that means a lot. I bought this book to support her and Walter and ended up loving the book. A win-win! Congratulations Heather. :-)

Love this! Lighthearted and fun. The author hits the mark with this playful interactive novel. The endings are fairly offbeat...and oftentimes darkly funny. I thoroughly enjoyed and continue to enjoy. I'd say that this book would be a better hit among female readers. My husband said that this was one of the worst things he's ever read. :)

After Reading This and Pretty Little Mistakes, Would I Read A Third Do Over Novel by Heather McElhatton? - Definitely!,

This review is from: Million Little Mistakes (Paperback)
I read Pretty Little Mistakes, this author's first do over (choose your own adventure style) novel about a year ago, and can say, I think Million Little Mistakes is even better! You are a similar character to the one in that one and also McElhatton's normal style novel Jennifer Johnson Is Sick of Being Single. You are though, a little bit older than the character in Pretty Little Mistakes. This time round, you've just won $22 million in the lottery. With financial freedom brings all sorts of choices, opportunities, as well as reactions from those you know and those you come across. The first decision you will have to make will be if you quit your job. Either decision will lead to a heap of other decisions which will either improve your life, or make it worse, and even sometimes end it (although you die less frequently than in Pretty Little Mistakes). Your choice will have you do just about everything, from buy an island, visit the titanic at the bottom of the ocean, become a criminal, become an octomum, choose if you wish to join the undead, cure HIV, take on pirates, you can even end up becoming a very angry little mushroom. However your life turns out though, it's usually an extremely entertaining journey there. Seriously you'll just keep laughing. If you need a humorous book to brighten your day this is seriously it. Plus with so many outcomes, you can put this down and come back to it whenever you feel like a laugh again. Even read more mentally heavier novels in between stories, then come back again.
When each story ends you can just go back to the last decision and choose the other. You might need a number of bookmarks to make this a bit easier. This and Pretty Little Mistakes are a lot of fun to read. I hope Heather McElhatton brings out more of these in the future.

Choose your own adventure = Disappointment,

I was so excited to hear about a new choose your own adventure book. I read through every scenario and couldn't help from being disappointed. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't come up with a good ending. The weirdest scenarios would lead to the best endings. And I wasn't much of a fan of all the after-life and reincarnation stories. I hate to say that I didn't like the book because it had great potential, but sorry, I cannot lie!

I have thoroughly enjoyed both previous books from this author. I really thought she couldn't top Jennifer Johnson, but I was wrong. I love this book!! I like that in some of the story line conclusions, you can see into your future. The way that this book is constructed is perfect for the choose your own adventures. I will be going to a reading next month with this author, and am looking forward to it.
Excellent book.

fun,
This review is from: Million Little Mistakes (Paperback)
The reader has won $22 million in the Big Money Sucka! Lottery. Now we must choose how we will live and what we will do with the money. The choices are ours to make; as each time we select, second and third order effects occur. First we start with do we keep our jobs or not. If we quit our job, do we keep our current relationship or not? If we remain at work, do we hire a fund manager or not? Pressure mounts from loved ones as for instance Lanie needs a kidney transplant but that costs money.
This is a terrific interactive contemporary "do over" choose your own life as an adventure in which selections lead to other choices until that subplot is completed with fifty endings. Readers can then start over and choose a different thread; not all end happily. There are over a hundred possible story lines as this book is not intended to be great literature, but instead a fun diverting look (best perused over a couple of weeks) at how a person can make a Million Little Mistakes in which a fan can start over especially when and outcome ends sadly as some do (like marrying George Clooney). My first mistake was picking up this book,
This review is from: Million Little Mistakes (Paperback)
Meh...
I thought that an adult Choose Your Own Adventure book was going to be fun. I was wrong. I found the book to be a little shallow, which, I know, is to be expected when the whole premise is that you've just struck it rich. But even the character development seemed a little bleh at best. "Should I dump my boyfriend or not?" Well, I don't know. I barely even know him, although my character, who I don't really know either, apparently loves him. I found it hard to even pretend to enjoy reading the book. ::sigh:: What a waste of a good idea... |
