Editorial Reviews

Review

A Million in Prizes seduces in the best way: subtly, with a poignant wit, and a sly charm. --Carl Phillips

Here is a rarely expressed self-awareness that accedes as little to words as it does to the pain of the condition itself. --Fanny Howe

His poems are by turns philosophical, nostalgic, and subtly humorous, as he insistently disassembles the barriers between himself and his readers in a generous act of intimacy. --Shanna Compton

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Find, October 15, 2009
By Apoptosis (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
The book came recommended from a friend... I picked it up and read several poems when it arrived. Pleased to find the resemblance to e.e. cummings but was distracted by other activities. A week later I picked it up again to find that the poems had completely rearranged themselves (and to of course this was only in my mind). I may need to create reasons to source "On the Making of Things" whenever possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure for any poetry fan, July 11, 2009
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
There is much to chuckle at within one's own consciousness. "A Million in Prizes" is a collection from award winning poet Justin Marks, offering his own brand of philosophy through entertaining verse and writing. A solid compilation, "A Million in Prizes" is a treasure for any poetry fan. "Mantra": Terrycloth sun setting over/the old steel-wool river//The air a translucent sphere of frayed twine/the truth can be so lame//shifting forms/unchanging my hands//know what they're doing.
