Silhouette Romance # 1844 - December 2006 Nick Regan has many reasons not to trust people, and Lydia Standford is an award-winning journalist who he believes will use every means available to get her story and advance her career. Lydia's been hired by his godmother, a respected human rights activist, to write her authorized biography. The events of their first meeting are not ideal; Nick's godmother has suffered a mini-stroke and in her fall has broken her ankle. Volunteering to retrieve the elderly woman's cat and deliver it to Nick's home, Lydia finds herself in the middle of another situation. Nick's five-year-old daughter Rosie has disappeared from the house, and everyone is looking for her. Lydia discovers Rosie and finds a beautiful child filled with anger and despair. Lydia notices the hearing aides in both of the child's ears, and asks the child by sign, if she is deaf. Rosie jumps immediately into rapid sign, and entreats Lydia to tell her father the reasons why she ran away. In returning Rosie to the house, Lydia is shocked to realize that Nick has never learnt how to communicate with his daughter. This story begins with misconceptions by both Nick and Lydia. Much of the story revolves around the adorable Rosie and the bond that forges with her father. Nick and Lydia are strong characters who both learn to view decisions they've made in the past in different lights. The romance doesn't really begin until the last third of the book, though their attraction to one another is mentioned early on. It is obvious that Ms. Oakley has written this story from her heart and she has done it marvelously. :D
