An interesting contrasting story, May 13, 2005
This review is from: Her Millionaire Marine (Silhouette Romance No 1720, Men of Honor) (Mass Market Paperback)
Two worlds - Marines & The Boardroom. How will they mesh? Marine, Striker Kozlowski has to figure out the way to operate his grandfathers oil business. Kate Bradley, lawyer to Striker's grandfather is to help Striker with the legal paperwork necessary with the transition. She had fantasies about him as a young girl, catching him naked when he was skinny-dipping one day. Married once to a thrill-seeker daredevil and tragically widowed, Kate Bradley doesn't want anything to do with men who risk their lives and Striker, meeting this prim, rich and gorgeous lawyer lady, wants nothing to do with his grandfather's business. However both Kate & Striker share an undeniable attraction as they heat up the sheets each other mistakenly believes that the other will give up each other's place to be with the other. A little side action takes place when Striker's parents meet Kate's parents as Striker's mum grew up next door to Kate's father when they were kids. Tension heats up as Striker's mum revisits her family home where she left to marry, against her grandfather's wishes, her Marine husband. The two men (Striker's dad and Kate's dad) engage in an immature one man upmanship to prove who has the bigger ego. Striker settles in quite well with his management of his grandfather's business, shaking up the staff right, left and center with a whole new management style but feels the obvious resentment and bitterness over his grandfather's poor treatment of his mother and thus, reluctantly takes the reins. The story is a little unrealistically written in that Kate's little idiosyncrasy of believing that when she goes after her own dreams, someone else pays. That itself is believable enough BUT the reasons for that belief are a little shakily constructed. I suppose they are passable though. More importantly is the ending which was constructed a little to hastily where Striker leaves Katie to go on a Marine mission and they realise they are mistaken about each other giving up his/her occupation (Striker believes that Kate accepts his Marine job and Kate believes he is staying on at his grandfather's business. Although the last chapter portrays Striker as missing Kate and his realisation that his feelings about her are serious, it doesn't hint that Striker's intention to reunite with Kate and tell her his feelings. Instead a critical car accident involving Kate is what brings him to her side. Also that she "miraculously recovers' is a little unbelievable. But what really is unrealistic is that all of a sudden he acquisces to her wishes to run his grandfather's business and all but gives up his Marine job (he is on-call for emergencies only). While I see that if Striker remained at the Marines, it would mean serious heartache and hard acceptance for Kate, I think that it should have been written that Striker "missed" the challenge of running the business when he returned to the Marines after leaving Kate. That would make it more plausible that he gives up his Marine job for her. The book does mention he did enjoy the challenge a bit when he did it and he certainly gets in the thick of the job after marrying Kate but I thought the "happily ever after" could have been constructed better. But overall, a good novel.

A story of honor...and love!, August 14, 2004
This review is from: Her Millionaire Marine (Silhouette Romance No 1720, Men of Honor) (Mass Market Paperback)
Striker Kozlowski never wanted any part of his grandfather's wealth, but honor demands he take over running the company. Striker planned on doing his duty, then returning to his life as a marine. Although marines are known for anticipating all the possibilities, Striker never planned on, or anticipated Kate Bradley's affect on him. How can he reconcile the life he loves with a woman he's falling in love with?
Cathie Linz crafts a wonderful story of honor...and love!
