Old people's music? I don't THINK so!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mills Brothers - All Time Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
While the Mills Brothers were "before my time," I remember my mother singing "Paper Doll" and "Glow Worm" to me while she brushed my hair when I was a very little girl. Then I heard the Mills Brothers sing both of those songs on an Oldies radio station, and I was hooked. Their voices blend so beautifully, and their harmony is so incredible that it's difficult to believe that anyone who loves music would not love this album. From the poignant "Till Then" of the WWII years to the upbeat "Be My Life's Companion," this group knows their way around a song. Everyone will have his or her personal favorites--mine are still "Paper Doll" and "Glow Worm." My one regret--I can't help but wish that this album also featured "When You Were Sweet Sixteen," but if it did, it would rate six stars, and I can only give five. If you like real melodies, meaningful lyrics, and voices that will never grow old, buy this album.

You have a lot of CD choices from which to choose in front of you, and reviewers (all experts) whine: which compilation sounds bad, how so many good ones were left out, how some are re-records, etc. So I am very glad to have this particular CD for my very own. I made a good choice. And the songs herein are all in such perfect harmony and covering so much of the Mills' career, and I am so glad to see so little negativity on the reviews of THIS compilation. Avoid the naysayers (who know better than us); buy THIS CD before they discover it and rain on your parade.

The Mills Brothers were one of the absolute best male vocal groups from the 30's thru the 50's. Having grown up listening to them I had to get this cd when it first came out and it gets played quite often. This includes all their best hits including the hard to find "Cab Driver" which is not found on other best of collections. For wonderful music with beautiful vocals, add this to your collection and enjoy.

It wasn't until the early 1980s that I became aware of The Mills Brothers' music, was working in a Dallas office building and my coworkers (mainly seniors) had the radio tuned to a 1930s thru 1950s vintage pop oldies station. It was "The Glow Worm" song that first grabbed my attention, I recalled a children's version of it with different lyrics back when I was a little kid in the 50s. The MB version is a lot more fun to listen to! Later on got a Time-Life audio cassette of "Your Hit Parade-1950" that had the MB hit "Nevertheless", another great song.
Radio stations that play OLD oldies are pretty much gone in my neck of the woods, and I turned to Amazon as my new MB music source. This CD includes their biggest hits from the early 1940s all the way to their 1967 comeback hit "Cab Driver". I don't consider myself to be a pure audiophile but can report that the digital remastering of these old recordings is very well done, and the Mills' four-part harmony comes thru beautifully and noise-free. The songs with big band accompaniment are "clean" enough to easily pick out the different instruments. Listening to this CD with headphones is a delight. As a bonus, a condensed history of the group is included in a small booklet and is very interesting reading. If you're a Mills Brothers fan, you won't go wrong with this compilation of their music, and is great value for the money as well. Highly recommended.

I was born in 1941, my earliest memory of the Mills Brothers is the radio broadcasts wih their songs, also riding with my parents in the auto and them singing the popular songs. In later years I came by many of their 33RPM albums as well as 78RPM records. My friends thought I was wierd for listening to ths Mills Bros (as well the Ink Spots). I was in High School from Sept.1954< out of college in 1962, I. experianced Rock& Roll from day #1. I/we drove from Rhode Island to the Brooklyn Paramount Theater in New York city many times to see the "Allen Freed" rock&roll shows with Little Richard-Chuck Berry-Bill Haley and many many other stars of the era. This was a fad and I enjoyed it live, however, I never listened to R&R at home on the phoneograph, only the Mills and the Spots and the likes of them.
There was a musical tent theater (later a round theater) with a rotating center stage, located in Warwick, Rhode Island, that operated during the summer seasons, I had the privelage to see and hear the Mills Brothers perform many times thru the years, in fact, they appeared at the Warwick Musical Theater on their 50th anniversary year in show business, it made me estatic to see the many standing ovations they were given, it seemed the show would go on forever, but, they got exhausted. The last song I remember that night was "DONT BLAME ME", I can still see and hear Harry Mills in my mind, singing his solo part, "I can't help it if I never" WOW. The show finally ended and I felt sad watching Hebert being led off the stage, you see he had gone blind in his later years.

Till Then,

I am a child of the '90s, and I first heard of The Mills Brothers on "Millenium", with their song "Till Then". I loved the song when I first heard it, and I still do. It's haunting melody and sooting lyrics that blend together to create a tune you'll carry with you forever.
