This review is from: Milly Darrell (Paperback)
I have surrendered myself to many a lengthy novel by Mrs. Braddon, and it was fun to enjoy the familiar dose of mystery, romance and social machinations in a 135-page novella. The narrator, Mary Crofton, is the typical impoverished gentlewoman of governess class so often encountered in Victorian fiction. Rescued from a grinding teaching job by Milly Darrell, a rich young lady briefly attending the school, Miss Crofton becomes the watchful companion of her good and lovely friend. Potential threats to Milly's happiness loom, but thankfully Miss Crofton is on the spot to avert disaster. Mrs. Braddon is at her best keeping us in suspense through several volumes, but Milly Darrell is nonetheless a pleasant indulgence for any fan of this mistress of the nineteenth-century sensation novel. |
