Editorial Reviews

CRI is proud to present its new series, CRI Archives, which will feature the coupling of digitally-remastered works from its historic archive with archival presentations of portions of the original packaging. The first release in the series, New Music for the Piano with pianist, Robert Helps, features 21 works which were originally released by RCA Red Seal label in 1966. The LP was subsequently re-released by CRI in 1971. Both LP releases were under the auspices of The Abby Whiteside Foundation which compiled the collection of new piano works. The new CD package features not only the mastery of Helps as performer but also new program notes commissioned from Alan Rich, the noted music critic of L.A. Weekly. This disc remains the only source for most of these recordings which represent a cross-section of the movements and leaders in American composing just past the mid-20th-century mark. Includes works by Dahl, Gideon, Babbitt, Powell, Gould, Hovhaness, and Perle, among many others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of pieces with fine performances by Helps September 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
All the pieces on this record were printed in one collection, New Music for the Piano. [Piano works by Samuel Adler, Josef Alexander, Milton Babbitt and others.] Selected by Joseph Prostakoff, by Lawson-Gould in 1963. They comprise a beautiful picture of trends in American composition at the time, placing it among albums such as Tombeau de Claude Debussy and the Cos Cob Song Album in terms of historical importance. Helps took on a fairly daunting task in faithfully interpreting a huge number of contrasting composers' styles and unique technical demands, and he makes good music out of all of them. Obviously some pieces are better than others, but none of them are without interest and charm. There are actually three pieces in the collection that are missing from this CD reissue but are available on other CRI CDs (Two Episodes: 1933 by Arthur Berger, Allegro Giocoso by Leo Kraft, and Sinfonia and Fugato by Vivian Fine). If you like American composition from the middle of the 20th century I'd definitely pick this disc up (and find the original collection second-hand, it's worth the money).
