What a great version of one of the oldest "race" games. Parcheesi requires a lot more strategy than a casual glance would indicate. Which piece to move, to enter a piece or move one already out, to go home for the bonus or wait, to hit an opponent for the bonus or not . . . there is a lot to think about. The board is beautiful, and the pieces (tiger, buffalo, elephant and camel) are stylishly designed. It is not only fun, it's unpredictable. A player can come from behind and win before you know it. Never boring. In terms of educaton, it teaches counting, strategy, and decision making. There is also a brief paragraph on the inside of the box describing the Indian cultural relevance of each of the animals. The mounted board is average in terms of durability, and the pieces are plastic. The wood dice are a nice touch. Note: It is not a "Classic Parcheesi board game", which implies it is the classic or traditional version. This is a cosmetic update to "Parcheesi, the Classic Game of India". If you are looking for the traditional version with pawns, that is still available as well.

I'm glad I didn't read the other reviews before I bought this board game as a present for my son. I would have worried about it being "cheesy" and "not worth the money."
We have never played any other version of this game so I guess we don't know what we are missing from the original. I thought the game was simple to learn but still had plenty of excitement as it was hard to tell who would win up until the last moment. The bright colored animals and game board make this game visually appealing and I especially appreciated the educational information enclosed about the animals used for pawns in the game. If you are looking for a game that is fun to play with your kids this is an excellent choice. If you are looking for the original classic for adult play it seems like you would not be happy with this version of the game.

A fun redesign of a classic board game,

Contrary to other traditionalists who have faulted this product for its redesign I herald it. Parcheesi is a classic race game and elements of it have been copied by more germane modern games such as Sorry and Aggravation. Parcheesi does have strategy the others lack, which makes it a more enduring game. It is also fun to play! Traditional Parcheesi games are generally quite bland in design making the game unappealing to the uninitiated. Parcheesi is generally one of those "throw in" games that come with classic multi-game packs of Backgammon, Chess, Checkers, etc. Traditional boards with dice and cups are relatively easy to find, so I applaud Hasbro for adding some color and ethic flavor to the board to make it more visually appealing. This is no worse than a redesign of a classic Monopoly in a favorite pop culture theme like Star Wars or Simpsons. If a collector is looking to Hasbro for any true-to-tradition, elegant classic board game, be it Backgammon, Parcheesi, Chess or whatever, they are looking at the wrong publisher anyway. In an age where many children might come upon Parcheesi unaware of its Indian (not Native American) roots, I commend Hasbro for going all out in design to remind the player of its ethnicity. While this design is not traditional to Indian games, the cute animals, wooden dice, lovely Indian decorative flourishes, and rich tapestry colors do make for a lovely set up. As most American players are unaware of the mystical numbers associated with the various dice rolls, space location, etc., I think the lovely Lotus spaces, etc., do much to further contemplation that the game is more than just a fun race game. Many kids--let alone families--aren't "in" to board games any more. Parcheesi is a classic worthy of play; if a nice, updated design makes more kids apt to try it out, or more families try to play it together, then something good has been accomplished.

Having grown up on Parcheesi with the nice wooden "pawns", the individual dice cups, and four separate sets of dice (one for each player)... this new updated version by Milton Bradley (not the original manufacturers)is a bit disappointing. The pawns are now all shaped like animals and they're cheezy and plastic. The board is smaller, although a bit more interesting. There are no dice rolling cups anymore, which was a big attraction because each player had his/her own set of dice for rolling. The instructions are more complex and can be difficult to interpret. Not every game has to be Monopoly! Some things were better left the way they were. I'm currently bidding on the original version in great condition at eBay. They have plenty of "classic" editions for less than the new cheap set!

I just have to say that this version of Parcheesi is just as fun as the original. I happen to like the board, it is colorful and appealing. A lot of people have complained about the pawns due to the fact that they are shaped to be animals. Yes, it is true the wooden pieces were nicer but,the animals have a story behind them. This game is sooo much fun, my family and I enjoy it.. Comparing it to the old version is silly, enjoy the game for what it is..... I definately recommend this game.. Enjoy!!!

An enjoyable game for any 2 to 4 people to play over and over again, this Parcheesi has wonderful and attractive design. The green water buffalo, red tigers, blue elephants (which resemble the pokémon Phanpy and are my favorites) and yellow camels are fun, bright, appealing little plastic pieces that add to the game's entertainment value. I love it!

We LOVE this game. It's like a strategic version of SORRY!, played with dice rather than cards. Use your pawns to form blockades that your opponenents can't pass, to land on safety spaces and wait to ambush your opponent, etc. The premise is just like SORRY! (get four pawns home), but incorporates flexibility, strategy, and bonuses that SORRY! lacks. It's good for kids' math skills, too. Our 12-year-old nephew wants his own for Xmas. We bought this game only knowing that it was a classic--nothing more. The game board and pieces are very attractive. The pawns are tigers, elephants, camels, and water buffalo. Wooden dice are a nice touch. We learned this game by studying the rules.

I purchased this Classic Parcheesi Board Game for my parents, who are retired. They had enjoyed the original Parcheesi for almost 40 years, and their game board had worn out. I was disappointed to find that this is not the "classic" version of the game at all; rather, it has been redesigned. Instead of regular game pieces, there are 4 different kinds of animals (tiger, elephant, camel, and water buffalo). There is only one set of dice (the original game had 4 sets with 4 dice cups), and the game board looks very different. Since my parents are traditionalists, I ended up returning the game.

I bought this game because we are trying to spend more time together as a family and we were getting tired of the games we already had. I remember Parcheesi from when I was a kid, so I thought we would give this version a try. (despite those who said they did not like it)
My kids did have fun with it and we have played it almost every day since we got it two weeks ago. They like the animals and they like the board design, easy to play and understand. Even when there are only two of them playing, they seem to have fun with it. This version seems to go faster than I remember regular Parcheesi... maybe less spaces on the board?? I don't know. I would even play this version with adults.... not for children only! We did replace the dice with some we had from another game. Nobody liked the feel of these dice for some reason. Other than that... game on!! |
