Product Description

Amazon.com

Parcheesi, a family classic since the 1860s, is the ultimate race-and-chase board game. The object is take four pawns from start to home, using rolls of the dice to dictate your moves. It sounds easy, but to accomplish your mission you have to first roll a five to even move off of start, and then you must avoid running into blockades and dodge your opponents, who threaten at every turn to send you back to the beginning. If you plot your moves strategically and use the safety zones scattered around the board, you might just make it. Parcheesi comes with a game board, 16 wooden pawns in four colors, two dice, and a dice cup that's a little too small to be truly useful. Parcheesi is for two to four players.

Editorial Review

"Pachisi" was so popular during the 16th century that the Indian Emperor Akbar had his palace courtyard transformed into a life-sized Pachisi court! The game was played with human "pawns," who wore color-coded saris and were ordered about on the marble squares. Simple to learn, irresistibly fun to play, Parcheesi has just the right sprinkling of strategy mixed with all the elements of classic race-and-chase games: revenge, captures, lucky doubles, and rewards. The Deluxe Edition game board, though neither life-sized nor marble, is quite generous (18.5 inches square). Players each get their very own dice and dice cups; brightly painted wooden pawns come with an extra in each color just in case one is lost to the maharajah or eaten by a tiger. Deluxe Parcheesi is for two to four players. --Julie Ubben

3.0 out of 5 stars Not like the boards of the past., March 7, 2001

I grew up playing this wonderful game and bought a game for my own family to play many years back. Now that my son has a family of his own, I bought them the current Deluxe version of the game. Were we all very disappointed. The board doesn't just have the center fold, but actual quarter separations on which the rolled diced catch. The cups are too small in ratio to the dice size so that if both dice start to come out at the same time, they catch and don't exit the cup. The green and blue "men" are so dark and close in color that in ordinary ceiling light they are very hard to distinguish from one another (a dot of light paint had to be applied to the tops of one set of men to make the distinction). If only there was a choice of this games makers!

Deluxe Parcheesi is the original game and I think this is the one that should be available in stores, not the new one.

My brothers, father and I have been playing Parcheese for years. After I got married, my wife and I began. Am looking for a well crafted wooded board and pieces. This is a cardboard gameboard, plastic pieces. Gets the job done, but I'd like to be playing more elegantly!
