I bought this because I can' find them anywhere in any local auto parts vendor. I use it to determine when to replace my tires and measure my tires for winter traction (4/32" minimum for snow - tire tread visual indicators are 2/32" so they are useless to me) so no more guessing or finding those lincoln pennies for me. It works very well but is a little messy since the shaft oil rubs all over your fingers. I keep it safely stored away from dust in my toolbox.

I'm a regional aircraft mechanic, and I use the Milton S448 when checking our tires for wear. It's very accurate, and easy to read. I need to be sure the depth of our tires are within FAA regulations, and this tool does it with flying colors. We were having lots of delays for tire changes because mechanics were getting inaccurate readings from lower quality depth gauges. And you know how much a delay can cost an airline. So I presented this gauge to our upper management, and they are looking into purchasing this gauge for all our mechanics.

tire tread depth gauge!

1. measures the depth of the tire tread? Check

2. constructed so it wont fall apart after three uses? Check

what more could you ask for in a tire tread gauge?

Oily, but it's cheap and it works. Because of the oil on the shaft, I store it with the shaft completely compressed.

pros
-it works.
-it feels like an expensive pen
-fair price /w free shipping

cons
-the measurement marks aren't all in one line, so you have to turn the cylinder to read exact measurement.
-it's shipped drenched in oil. i ragged down everything except inside cylinder...at least i know it won't dry out any time soon!

Buy one and avoid an accident. Great product but auto parts stores don't carry them. Much more accurate than using a quarter. Be sure to check center and both edges of each tire. I thought my tires were good for another 10,000 miles until I checked them with this.

So your dad taught you to use a nickel and Lincoln's head to tell when it's time for new tires. However these days, tread patterns and tire materials are a lot different. It's handy to have tool specifically designed for the task. The Milton is a pocket clip sized gauge that in increments of 1/64" tells you how your tread is wearing. No more crawling under the wheel well to see Lincoln... Just insert it over a tread groove and push down. Where ever it rests it will stay. Pull it out (get out your glasses) and read it. That easy. It's nice for non-gear heads and people who aren't as limber as they used to be alike.

Stopping is the most important mechanical feature of your vehicle. Tires obviously play a huge role in this, particularly when road conditions are wet and slippery. So checking your tread and planning for the next big expense of replacing them is important. Be sure to also check your tire pressure often as this plays a large role in tire wear and driving safety.
