Milwaukee 0299-20 Magnum 8 Amp 1/2-Inch Drill

I bough tthis drill and it is great. The torque is enough for any job you will run into for a hand drill. It runs 2-1/2" forestner bits without any difficulty. It also offers very smooth easy to control variable speed trigger. The only thing I was disappionted in was that I like having cases for my tools and this one didn't come with one. Milwaukee will sell you one for ($$$) but I would rather make my own than pay that much for a box.

I bought this drill based on a tool shootout of high amperage 1/2 inch drills in tools of the trade magazine. This drill came out head and shoulders above the offerings from hitatchi, makita, dewalt, portercable and bosch. The highlights of this drill are gobs of torque(It will twist your arm if you are not careful!) solid yet lightweight construction, a long, heavy gauge ruber 3 prong cord, a heavy duty keyed chuck. I picked this drill up at the home depot during a tool trade in promotion(traded in an old single speed metal bodied black and decker 3/8th drill.) I have been so impressed at the capabilities of this drill. It has driven 4 inch long 3/8ths lag screws without a problem. It will stir a paddle bit in drywall mud and drive up to a 2 and 9/16ths self feed bit. This is one incredible tool. I will be replacing the keyed chuck with a keyless though.

I am in the trades and have owned the 1/2 inch magnum drills for years without to many problems except the notorious switch problem milwaukee has. The drills have lasted for years and have always had plenty of power and durability. I purchased a replacement drill with the new handle configuration and it just didn't hold up.The drill is now dangerous to use without a handle and it is such a hassle to get a replacement.I'm looking for a new brand.

This drill is an awesome addition to my shop. My old non-name brand drill had a cheap chuck and was really noisy, this is smooth and has a quality chuck. Very nice for the money.

I had done my research and narrowed my choices down to this drill and a hitachi. I purchased the hitachi. The first thing I will say about that is I didn't hate the drill, but it was far to powerful for what I needed. That then leads to the fact that it busted itself within a month of use. I am still trying to work with Hitachi to get it repaired or get my money back.

I debated a long time whether to purchase a new drill while the other was still warm from it's death, and I did. This was a great decision, because the Milwaukee drill was exactly what I wanted and should have bought to begin with. GREAT DRILL. Wish it had a nice case.

Here's my take on the 0299 vs 0234. I gave my 0234 to my best friend a couple of years back! We put a RAD head on it and he uses it as a right angle drill! I got it on clearance and it was made in USA! I did not like the ergonomics of the 0234! It would pinch my fingers pulling the trigger! I like the ergos of my Bosch 1013,Makita 6302H and Porter Cable 6614 better! Yeah I like drills! I recently scored a 0299 for my friend on Ebay! Way better trigger than the 0234! Plus I like the fact you can rotate the handle 360 on the 0299! I don't care for the one position screw in handle of the 0234 or the PC 6614 for that matter! Sometimes to get in somewhere to drill the handle needs to be postioned! As for side handles the Makita 6302h/6303H are the best;they lock in place via grooves on handle and drill plus rotate 360 degrees!As for the 0234's lasting longer,a 5.5 amp(0234) will stall more readily than a 8.0 amp(0299) thus protecting the geartrain. 8.0 amp mptors are harder to stall and instead if bit is stuck/binding will tend to tear up the geartrain! That being said my friend needed a drill w/ big time torque(he works for water company and works on pumps etc alot). Variable speed on the 0299 was smooth and drill was quiet cept for noise of the big cooling fan!I hate the lock on button on the 0299. It is recessed to deep inb body of drill making it hard to depress!0299 loses a star for being made in china! A tool named Milwaukee and made in china is Ridiculious!

The arm on the side of this drill is the weakest link.

Other then that this drill is Scary strong. Don't let the size fool you.

A mentor of mine and one of the best engineering minds I knew told me in his 35 year career he only bought Milwaukee and I took his advice when buying a new drill for my house.

I bought this drill, and pounded on it for a few weeks building heavy duty wood projects and never had an issue. I even was dropped 5 feet onto concrete and is still running perfect, almost cried watching it fall but was too far to catch it. I will always be a fan of the keyed chuck, it takes more time but the bit always holds, my fathers Sears brand drills always had them, and I have an 18V cordless drill that isn't keyed and it gets rather annoying. The transmission case is heavy metal, the body is plastic, some people complained it was made out of plastic, well that's they way of the world.

I am concerned like another person over the reverse switch, it does seem weak, but it doesn't take much to switch so I will just be more careful with it.

I like the fact the cord can be easily replaced, though looking at the cord I don't think its going to need that for awhile.

Much like Pabst my choice of beers is no longer brewed in Milwaukee, I was very disappointed to see this was made in China, but what isn't.

All in all, great drill.

Nice drill ! Good quality ! Only bad thing is that it comes in a cardboard box. Don't like that at all.
