5.0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee Variable Temp Heat Gun, June 16, 2000
This review is from: Milwaukee 8977-20 11.6 Amp Variable Temperature Heat Gun (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased a Milwaukee Variable Temperature Heat Gun, Model 8977-20 to strip several layers of old paint on the exterior trim of a 1914 Four Square home. The Milwaukee delivered on the brand's reputation for contractor quality and thoughtful ergonomic design.

After using the heat gun for several window frames, several things stand out: It's light. An important quality when working above your head. (This was one of the key reasons I selected the Milwaukee heat gun over competitors'.)

It's quiet. You barely hear it. Again, a nice feature when you are working several hours at a stretch. It's easy to adjust temperature (just twist the rear housing cover). It really works well. Several layers of badly cracked paint, scraped away with only a few seconds of heat.

Be careful on dry, bare wood with any heat gun. It can burn. I used a spray bottle to wet down old, bare wood when working close to the edge.

The Milwaukee heat gun is very quiet and provides rapid, constant heat. Temperature adjustment is easy, granted it does take some guess work to determine the output temperature. I've used this unit constantly for paint removal and shrink sleeving applications.

This puppy works great. I have run for several hours while prying up self-adhesive floor tiles and have had no problems. It's light weight and the handle does not get overly hot so you can use it without a glove.

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality, does the job, September 4, 2005

I have used the 8977-20 heat gun from Milwaukee for one entire day. It was on virtually the entire time for the purpose of removing varnish. It is light weight, quiet and provides ample heat for the job. The temp control is conveniently located at the rear of the gun. My only suggestion would be to provide a stand that would allow it to point upwards without blocking the airfow. It does have a flip-out stand but it rests the gun on the air intake. Other than that minor point, it is a great product

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this one!, April 12, 2011

We used this product to strip the paint off our entire house - 50 years worth on cedar siding - so I have about 100 hours of use on this gun. Yes we are crazy - in retrospect we should have sandblasted. We rented a few heat guns before buying this one. This heat gun is VERY superior to others we used and it is VERY heavy duty. It's design is also nice and feels very comfortable in your hand for extended use...trust me on this one. Also the variable temperature comes in really handy. Sometimes you need higher heat to get the paint off and other times the high heat would scorch the wood. It does get hot - I mean come on, it's a heat gun. It's not the handle that's hot per se, but all the residual heat coming out of the gun makes your hand hot. We always wore work gloves when using it - especially on the hand holding the scraper. If you need a heat gun, buy this one. Don't waste your money buying something cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Very Well, April 7, 2011

This review is from: Milwaukee 8977-20 11.6 Amp Variable Temperature Heat Gun (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought the Milwaukee 8977-20 11.6 Amp Variable Tempature Heat Gun to use to heat the linings of my ski boots for refitting. It was very important not to overheat the material. Before I bought the gun, I knew that the temperature dial allows you to raise or lower the temperature but does not tell you what the temperature is. I simply used a thermometer to measure the output and marked the temperature dial. The temperature I required was low in the gun's range, and the gun worked very well for the task.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review for Milwaukee 8977 heat gun, October 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Milwaukee 8977-20 11.6 Amp Variable Temperature Heat Gun (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is one of the better heat guns that we have found. We use these things for a commercial purpose and really put them to the test. They have a great fan that really pushes out the heat. We have gone through all brands of guns and only started using these recently. So far, so good. We have three of these at the moment. Only one problem so far. The tempature adjustment dial on the back should be somewhere else, or made more durable. On one of them, the dial came off and we couldn't get it to stay on and some dirt got inside and the thing melted to beyond repair!

Great heat gun. Works really well, and relatively quiet. Light enough you can use it for a long time without fatigue. Like others, I wish there were some markings on the back, so you could choose a setting - even if it's not a temperature, a relative setting would be useful. A Sharpie pen will do the trick, but it seems like Milwaukee should add this feature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice heat gun., July 29, 2008

This review is from: Milwaukee 8977-20 11.6 Amp Variable Temperature Heat Gun (Tools & Home Improvement)
We use heat guns every day in our business. This is a very nice and well constructed heat gun. Heavier duty than the one it replaced. My only complant is there's no markings to set the heat to. Our last heat gun had numbers 1-10, and even though it wasn't the temp. of the heat gun, it was very useful. I am going to number the heat settings myself and it will be the perfect heat gun for us! HTH
