I use to own a Makita flashlight that used rechargeable batteries, and after that experience, I stayed far away from them. The charge was only good for quick uses... never anything substantial. For years afterwards I use a Maglite whenever I needed a flashlight, but would go through batteries way too often, which became an expensive option. After purchasing a Milwaukee V28 drill, I decided to get the V28 flashlight to go with it. Within three days of getting it, I ended up working on a plumbing problem and spent over three hours under a house at night. After that, I'm convinced the V28 flashlight is the best flashlight ever made. It's VERY bright, and being able to adjust the position of the beam using the pivoting head is a fantastically useful feature. Another feature that I didn't see mentioned is the ability to adjust the 'spread' of the beam like on Maglite flashlights... extremely useful. After three hours, the power didn't even begin to fade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good emergency light, October 15, 2007
This review is from: Milwaukee MLW49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Milwaukee 49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light

Pros:

- Once you have the light (and battery/charger) it costs nothing additional to use, unlike a flashlight that needs replacement batteries.

- light lasts over 5 hours on a single charge; much longer than most battery-operated lamps.

- great for emergency lighting needs - keep it with your job-site V28 tools, carry it in your vehicle, or use it at home when the power goes out.

- adjust beam angle anywhere from aiming down to straight up.

- stays put on a flat surface since the V28 battery bottom has a flat rubber pad on it.

- beam spread can be adjusted to a wider flood, by unscrewing the bulb cover.

- the principle weight of the light is the battery.

- seems well constructed, with a solid-feeling off/on switch.

- 5-year warranty (don't forget to register Milwaukee tools at their web site).

- easy to carry: in your hand with the comfortable grip, or, on the V28 belt-clip-lock system.

Cons:

- Although it's reasonably bright for a flashlight, I was a disappointed that it uses an incandescent bulb instead of LED technology, which typically produces much more light per watt. For the same brightness with LED's, the battery would have lasted much longer.

- Another useful feature would have been a brightness selection. When used as an emergency light in the house when the power goes out for example, it would be nice to have a 1/2 power switch so the light would last 10 hours instead of 5.

Summary:

If you already own a V28 tool (and batteries & charger), or, are planning to get one of the Milwaukee kits that this comes in, it's worth owning.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bulbs burn out from flashlight head movements, April 6, 2010

This review is from: Milwaukee MLW49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased the Milwaukee V28 multi-tool package three years ago. I've use the flashlight 40-50 times a year for my big cold storage unit during the darkness of winter. The problem I continue to have is the bulbs burning out. I've tried the Milwaukee OEM and many other properly rated bulbs. I've ensured everything was installed properly and firmly. The issue has been with the rotating head. The flashlight head moves several degrees with each adjustable click-in-place movement. The shock/impact of these movements causes the bulb to jitter so much, it self destructs. It puts out a great beam of light, sits beautifully still when on a flat surface and has a rugged outer appearance. Unfortunately the internals are flawed. I don't have a choice of a different flashlight for these V28 batteries. I would not recommend this for every day use. Casual use when the power goes out or out camping is okay. This flashlight would not be suitable for daily use at construction sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FLASHLIGHT ,EASY TO USE, August 23, 2008
This review is from: Milwaukee MLW49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
If You buy any of the V28 cordless products from Milwaukee than
you might as well spend a few bucks more for the flashlight seeing how
you will already have the v28 batteries, so how can you go wrong.
The light has great ajustabilty and the battery life is great .
Enough said!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good,expensive to repair, May 21, 2008

This review is from: Milwaukee MLW49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
It's a reasonably good replacement for a regular drag light, you can put it upright or on it's back and pivot the head to aim it where you want. Pretty bright but despite what others are saying it doesn't have an adjustable beam, it just gets dimmer as you unscrew the bezel and the bulb goes behind the reflector. It does throw off significant heat so you have to keep the head vents clear and there's no bail or hook on top to hang it for ladder work.

After some 3 years of moderate use the bulb blew with a flash. The in-head replacement wouldn't work, though the filament looked fine, so I ordered 2 2-packs of bulbs for $15 with shipping and they wouldn't work either so I got the exploded parts .pdf from milwaukee's site and took the worklight apart(5/64" allen wrench works for that center pivot bolt)and used my multimeter to find the switch assembly was bad(complicated little circuit board with the switch and the tiny capacitor looked arc-damaged). New switch assembly $17.50 with shipping plus some soldering. While I'm already in too far, if you have a similar problem just get a new worklight for $28.53 + freeship.

***$10 + freeship now because people are clearing stock for the new LED model. Got another old one, 5 hours runtime is plenty and $10 vs. $65 for the new one rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Milwaulkee nothing but the best, November 29, 2007
This review is from: Milwaukee MLW49-24-0185 V28 Lithium-Ion Work Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had other Milwaulkee tools and have come to learn that thy are nothing short of the best. I bought the 28 volt kit from Amazon which came with the flashlight. I'm a home inspector and thought I would use it on the job. The light is on steady for almost three hours and it still has half the charge left. The light is powerful and easy to handle. The weight is well distributed and having the swivel head enabling the light to be set down and pointing the beam where you need it is great. The 28 volt set including the flashlight is the best designed and built there is.

There is not much to say about this light that hasn't already been said. It is a battery operated light and it works well. If you point it at a white ceiling it will light up a fair sized room. If you already have the batteries, buying it is a good idea.

Wow, I have owned this light for 2 years now, and it is the best light I have ever had. Quality construction, easy to use, point/aim the beam, very adjustable, very stable too...as it sits on the large battery as its' base. It is so nice to have a light to work with, that actually does what you want it to. Just set it down, point the beam, and voila. It puts out loads of light for any job, and affords a wide beam too, lighting up a large area. I can't say enough about this work light. I use it all around the house, for most any job, including hooking up all the cables on the home stereo/TV setup. It's like having an extra person there, to hold the light for you.

The lithium-ion battery lasts for hours, or weeks if used occasionally, and recharge time is only some 20 min. or so. It always finishes charging before I expect it to.

This year, I just bought the Hammer Drill to go with it, and it too is the most awesome drill I have ever had.

Quality tools from Milwaukee!! Worth the investment.
