This is the only pH meter I've personally owned (versus the very expensive meters I've used at work) that has proven to be consistent, reliable, and does not need to be constantly recalibrated.
I've had to calibrate this meter exactly once so far, and even that was just to satisfy myself that it had been done as it read the 7.0 and 4.0 reference solutions correctly "out of the box". The process was extremely easy, which is nice. Never again will I use a "manual calibration" meter. I still double-check the calibration by testing the reference solutions each time I need to use the meter, but so far I have not had to re-calibrate. So nice :)
After having used a number of cheaper and lower-quality meters, some of which I've purchased here on Amazon, I would not hesitate to recommend this Milwaukee PH56 to others. It's been great for me so far.
I *strongly* recommend purchasing the pH 4.0 and pH 7.0 reference solutions and pH storage solution with the meter if you do not already own them. Although the user's manual states that the pH meter can be stored in water, I much prefer to use the correct storage solution.
1.) calibration- You have to calibrate between uses. It doesn't keep it's cal.
At first I had trouble calibrating with the 4.01 step. This was happening because the 4.01 solution was getting diluted with the 7.01 solution that was already on the probe from the last calibration step. To avoid this, spray the electrode with distilled water and wick it dry with a paper towel (don't actually touch the electrode). Then put it in the 4.01 solution and the calibration should only take a few seconds. Perhaps other users don't need to do this, and I'm guessing that's because they use have so much solution that the dilution doesn't confuse the calibration as much. This will still lead to an inaccurate cal. I'm surprised that the guy in the pH55 Cal movie on youtube has success with his cal even though he doesn't follow this procedure... Maybe it's because the cal routine isn't looking for the accuracy that the pH56 is spec'd to...
Also note that sometimes little air bubbles might get under the cavity that houses the temp probe and electrode (not in the electrode itself, which can also happen). I've noticed that this leads to inaccurate readings. To avoid this, I swirl the cup to get the air bubbles out.
2.) storage/cleaning- I store it in a shot glass filled 1"high with MA9015 storage solution I got from Northern Brewer ($9) between uses.Read more ›
