Story
Drunk, despondent, and down on his luck, a spellsword mercenary named Crais Sewell reluctantly accepts a job from a young, cheerful troubadour named Sophie Rothorn. Their mission: to recover seven jewels scattered throughout the world of Iyar- for what reason, Sophie refuses to say. On their travels, Sophie and Crais meet Melrose, an eccentric mage with a penchant for dissection, Tinon, a tomboy who wields her magic a little too liberally, and Patty, a young woman with a good heart and a love for magical items disproportionate to her funds. As it becomes clear that Sophie's quest is not unrelated to a past Crais would prefer to forget, he faces a choice: Will he confront his past failures, and ultimately overcome them, or succumb to despair and misery? It is entirely possible that the fate of the world, or at least Crais's corner of it, may depend on his answer.

Gameplay
Mimana: Iyar Chronicle is a single player, side-scrolling JRPG (Japanese role-playing game) in which players take on the role of disgruntled hero for hire, Crais Sewell. In debt to a local guild, players accept the job offered by Sophie Rothorm in hopes to get back to even. Along with Crais players also guide the actions of up to three female characters, and together engage in the real-time battles that make up the action in the game. Crais has a whole range of usable attacks ranging from basic hack and slash button mashing to precise combos that when executed correctly yield maximum damage with every stroke. Another valuable battle feature are prioritizable AI behaviors of other characters with regards to attacks, magic, healing and attack distances that can be easily altered depending on the strategy employed against a particular enemy. Just as with any RPG, success in battle equates to leveling of character, skills, arsenal and abilities, which in turn leads to even more success and challenges.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun dating sim/RPG., April 12, 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mimana: Iyar Chronicle (Video Game)
Honestly I really enjoy this game. It's a mix between a dating sim and a RPG. The story has multiple paths because of the fact that you can choose a female to date that's in your party. Though the system in which you pick one of the girls is invisible so you kind of have to guess how you are doing.

So first off let me get the negatives out of the way. People complain about the load times, but really it's not all that bad. Every once in awhile it will feel like your waiting a bit longer than the norm, but it shouldn't effect you all that much. The battle system could use a little fixing as your character doesn't always seem to respond just the way you want him to. You really only control the main character and the others are controlled by the A.I. Dungeons can be a bit annoying since you don't have a map, so you really have to remember where you went on your own.

The positives for this game way out do the negatives in my opinion. I love the animation and the art is pretty good. It plays kind of like Star Ocean and is easy to get the hang of, but people call the battle system repetative. It's a RPG for crying out loud, battles are always like that especially when you hit the maximum level. It also has dating simulation stuff mixed in and not to sound like a loser, but I really enjoy playing dating simulation games. So you have a mix of character interactions like you would see in Star Ocean and in games like Ar Tonelico, Mana Khemia, and well games like that. This effects the ending as well depending on which girl you end up with, but also effects the game since certain areas are accessed by dating different characters. Most definitly a multiple play through game.

The voice acting in this game rocks for the English release. I'm not even sure it has an option for Japanese VAs since I haven't checked. The first run comes with a soundtrack that only has a few songs on it and some character voicing that you can use as your messaging for your cellphone. They're actually pretty funny and enjoyable to listen to.

I say if you like RPGs in general this is a good buy. If you like dating sims it's an even better buy. The story focuses around those interactions so you will have to dive into that part of it. It also feels true to the Japanese release of the game from the other reviews I have read which makes me happy. It's been better than most of the other recent RPGs I've played that are actually new releases and not re-releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best RPG release for PSP in the past year or so, April 17, 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

I'll keep it simple - my main reason for writing this review is because there was only 1 review and I want to spread the word! This game plays like the 'Tales' games - which I love, and sadly haven't been released in North America on a portable system - there was one released in Europe that you can find used sometimes (Tales of Eternia), and the 'Tales of the World - Radiant Mythology' for the PSP - but it's not really story based so it doesn't count in my opinion.

The game is fun to play - like I said it's similar to Tales games - you assign special moves to a combo of the Square button and a direction. You can't control your other party members, but you can tell them to cast specific spells and set their priority for how they will use magic, attack, or heal.

Voice acting is extraordinary - I can't say I've heard better in any PSP game.

Load times are a bit longer than I'd like, but not horrible. I think you can buy it on the PlayStation Network, which would cut them down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome Game!, May 17, 2010

Ok! I don't write many reviews. But I will say that this is one of my favorite games of all time! If you are into JRPG's then this is one of the best! granted it has random battles but its not the old school final fantasy time battles. You swing freely and control your character they way you want it to be! The bits with the animation is pretty good and art is great! Some people say that there is a long loading time, but to be honest I don't really notice. I highly recommend this game. Even if you need a break from the normal rpg, this is a great game.
