Where have these guys been all my life?
I picked up this album cause it looked cool (how about that Mimi?). Great black and white shot. And I liked the decription of Vanguard on the back. It looked like 60s folk but I'd never heard of Mimi and Richard Farina before. What an introduction! If you like the clips then you'll like the album. They're a wonderful mixture of blues and folk and rock. There's...

Pack up your woes
Vanguard Visionaries is an extraordinarily disappointing series, given that the label is being so stingy with its offerings. The label has an excellent roster. If they wanted to publicise their archives, they could have been a great deal more generous at this price - or else offered it for $6 or so. It's also disappointing that Vanguard is ignoring some of the wonderful...

Where have these guys been all my life?, June 4, 2009
This review is from: Mimi & Richard Farina (Vanguard Visionaries) (Audio CD)
I picked up this album cause it looked cool (how about that Mimi?). Great black and white shot. And I liked the decription of Vanguard on the back. It looked like 60s folk but I'd never heard of Mimi and Richard Farina before. What an introduction! If you like the clips then you'll like the album. They're a wonderful mixture of blues and folk and rock. There's something whimsical and kind of humorous in addition to funky, melodic, hypnotic and even haunting. I don't know what the other reviewer is griping about - the amount of songs? There are 10 good songs. Vanguard for what it is worth has put out a lot of triple-disc sets from Newport Folk Festival to the Seigal-Schwall Band - then people complain it's too long! The 10 songs on this set will leave you wanting more, that's true, and maybe they can be found on other albums as well, but this is still a nice intro to I band I never knew existed.

Vanguard Visionaries is an extraordinarily disappointing series, given that the label is being so stingy with its offerings. The label has an excellent roster. If they wanted to publicise their archives, they could have been a great deal more generous at this price - or else offered it for $6 or so. It's also disappointing that Vanguard is ignoring some of the wonderful stuff in its archives and focusing instead on meaningless releases of this variety - the "greatest hits" by the same artists, on the same label, are a much better deal.
