Folk From a Galactic Scale,

I've been fascinated by Nate Lacy and Mimicking Birds ever since seeing them open for Modest Mouse in early 2009, and ever since then have been eagerly awaiting this release. To paraphrase Isaac Brock, this music does something for me that other music today just isn't doing. The ethereal guitar playing, the universal scale of Nate's lyrics; his voice is unique and comforting, and the individual atmospheres of each song he paints with his mix of electric and acoustic guitar truly take you on a musical journey and really give you an idea of the kind of potential and creativity Nate has to share with the world. Even before being signed, Nate Lacy was looking to be a prolific artist in his own right. His 23 song home demo stood on its own, akin to Foo Fighters' first album, which was largely the work of one person. However, this studio release adds the productive experience of Isaac Brock and percussive works of Mimicking Birds' Drummer, Aaron Hanson. Atmospheric, ethereal, and introspective are some appropriate words to describe the entire album. Again, to paraphrase Isaac Brock, releasing an album may not be a very good way of making a fortune these days, but I think this may be a unique case. I believe if all Mimicking Birds fans come together and support the creative works of the band, by purchasing this album (come on everybody, it's relatively inexpensive,) I think we'll see a whole lot more of the genius that is this album, and hopefully offer enough incentive to give Nate Lacy and Mimicking Birds the chance to mature into a world-class act. The last time I bought an entire album was at a small chain of music shops that has since gone out of business. If that isn't a testament to the quality of this music, I don't know what else to say. So, 5-stars from a fan of originality and quality music. -VastLite

I'm smitten with this album. The lead singer has one of those just-right soulful, sorrowful voices. Intelligent lyrics. Nice instrumentation. It's a little Richard Buckner in sound--sedate and rolling--but tighter, more polished. "Remnants and Pictures" manages to be both sing-along and meditative. "Them" has a wonderful creeping-in-the-night kind of rhythm going on. And "Burning Stars" is probably my favorite. Great music start to finish.

Soothing, Somber and Sweet,
This review is from: Mimicking Birds (Audio CD)
I've loved this album from the first day I owned it and even before hand from the demo tracks I had the opportunity to listen to. Nate has such an incredibly soothing, melodic voice. This is one of those albums you can put on in the car while taking a trip, in the kitchen while cooking dinner, or as a nice backdrop while having a party. It's not a pushy sound. It blends perfectly with whatever you may be doing with your time. The sound is both haunting and hopeful, joyous and desperate, ethereal and genuine. I highly recommend this album as each and every song on it is heartfelt and unique.

Acoustic masterpiece,

I must say I do love this record and was pleasantly surprised when playing it for the first time.Very few albums take you by surprise but tihs one certainly did, just like a breath of fresh air.A lovely acoustic record with great vocals and playing throughout with some nice effects, as a Bom Iver fan this is very easy to like. There are some great records around at the moment (The Boy Who Trapped The Sun, The Burns Unit, Darden Smith, Nathaliel Rateliff, CW Stoneking, Johnny Flynn and John Mellencamp)but this is exceptional in it's simplicity and quailty, highly recommended.

Half-Surprised Over the Lack of Publicity,

On this one. Not a shout-out anywhere even on indie blog sites like gorilla vs. bear. Especially, considering this album being produced by Isaac Brock. The result is a sound reminiscent of early Modest Mouse, admittedly their more minimalistic and less screaming tracks. Emusic carries this one and there's a link to some free songs on his (Nate Lacy) myspace page if you're interested.

The best new album I've heard in the past 10 years. Every aspect of this album is satisfying. The lyrics are thoughtful and soothing. The music is complex, yet easily accessible. Each listen reveals something new. I can't believe more people aren't talking about Mimicking Birds. Wow. They also have a free MP3 download album which is another absolute gift. Search for Not An Album, Just Songs and you'll find it. Highly recommended listening.

I love this album, from start to finish! You can hear a bit of Paul Simon-maybe a swoon or two of Neil Young. The lyrics are crafty, and the guitar picking is awesome. I love me some Loop. Killer track!

Soundscapes for a Lonely, Wondering Mind,

This band, Mimicking Birds, is just...slow, perfect melodies that accompany my life so seamlessly. The guy's welcoming and unique voice, the comforting acoustic guitars, and the various subtle musical additions (slide guitar, FX, cowbell, to name just a few) create a lush, beautiful soundscape. I type stuff like that a lot in my rather poorly written reviews, but this is the pinnacle of great music done by a new band lately. Found them on Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace label, and something instantly recognizable in a way just pulled me in. Perhaps the endless looping of masterly strummed and plucked acoustic/electric guitar? The lyrics of speculations on the universe and human life, and other peaceful ruminations? I think Nate Lacey and I have very similar musical aesthetics. This music touches me in a way other stuff just can't. It's perfect for riding in the passenger seat, nighttime walks, and laying in bed daydreaming the hours away, hoping to change yourself someday, and find something productive to do. Until that day comes, this should comfort me enough, and it's just what the doctor ordered :)I highly recommend. I almost demand you to get it. Every song is worthy of your attention. It's just that good.

I'm truly blow away the music of "Mimicking birds". I accually ran across this by complete mistake. Youtube has plenty of sampled songs but randomly coming across a masterpiece such as "The loop" is only but amazing to a person not expecting it. The music is very honest, through the finger picking to the quivering whispers leave some say breathless. The home recording of Nate Lacy is astounding and very inspirational to the average joe making tapes in his room. This album couldn't be me underrated then it is now, every music lover should have this album, plain and simple.
