A Steal at These Prices!,
By Airshifter Paul (Los Angeles, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mina D'Agua Do Meu Canto (Audio CD)
This is one of Gal's best albums of the past 10 years and a steal at circa $8.00!I have found a lot of her more recent albums overly orchestrated, her style a self-parody of diva-ness, and her voice shrill at times. This one, however, is a refreshing change and shows why she has gained such a following over the past 35 years or so. There is a good mix of Caetano Veloso classics ("Ciume" is the best version of this I've heard), bossa nova, and samba. A very listenable album, and highly recommended if you want "um bocadinho" (a small taste) of her range of talent.

MPB - Brazilian Popular Music,

Gal Costa is one of the greatest singers in Brazil. Her voice is smooth, easy to hear. Her music is even better for those who can understand portuguese, because of the letters. But even for those who can't it still great. MPB is Brazilian Popular Music. It's very easy to listen, a calm style of music with a good swing.

This is an absolute masterwork: the best songs by Chico de Buarque and Caetano Veloso are sung by a Gal Costa at her very best. All arrangements and orchestrations are wonderfully written and played, full of ideas, surprises, emotions. This is obviously music made the old-fashioned way (and I mean that as a great compliment) by people who know music and spent talent and quality time in their search of beauty. This is not a 5 minutes job by the last kid recycling someone else's bits, and I wish I could find more labors of love and craft such as this one.

SEDUCTIVE AND LUSCIOUS,

This was my first ever CD by a Brazilian vocalist. I have to say, this woman is a very talented singer. Her voice is so sensual, I tingled every time I listened to it! There are some uptempo songs - these rythms are quite exciting. And in the ballads, she completely envelops you with her emotional voice. If you like stuff like Sade, but would like at the same time to expand your musical horizons with some South American rythms, this is for you.
