Mind Expanders Vol 1 - VA, February 25, 2010
This review is from: Mind Expanders 1: In Search of the Orgiastic (Audio CD)
Nuggets, Pebbles, Instro Hipsters, Rubbles, New Rubbles, We Can Fly, That Driving Beat and Ripples are just a sample of many the comps devoted to music from the 60's and 70's. Now we can add another to the list, Past & Present's Mind Expanders Vol 1, a 16 track collection of psychedelic instrumentals that hail from as far away as Peru (Los Diablos) and California (Dave Myers Elite) or nearer to home, Belgium (Jokers)and France (Guy Pedersen). The highlights include: the epic, spaced out fuzz laden bluesy grandeur of Distillation (Blue Phantom); Cosmonautic Blues (Le Apollo & La Danse Cosmique)that sounds like it was written for a modern ballet featuring the clangers; 21-7-69 (Los Diablos), phased guitars meets tijuana brass; Baia (Jokers), surfing go-go girls in outer space.
Though let down by poor sound, Mind Expanders is another must for the 60's obsessive, fans of sound librarys and sleazy insrumentals. Of the 2 I prefer Vol 2 but the collector will want both.
