It still isn't working, November 11, 2008
I just purchased the ThoughtStream and still can't get it working. It comes with a CD that has no label and no instructions for the software. The small instruction manual that comes with the biofeedback unit applies to the unit used without computer interface, and nothing explains how to make the computer interface work. But I purchased this specifically because it had a computer interface. The unit comes with only a serial port connector, which did not work on my laptop. Even after I purchased a serial to USB connector, the software asks if I am using Com1 or Com3 and either choice crashes the software. I've downloaded installation software from the website (thinking it might be more current) and that hasn't helped. The software manual (which is only available if you dig around the installation disk or on-line) also says nothing about how to make the device or software work with a USB port. So, it might be a great product if and when you get it working, but it is poorly documented and difficult to interface with common computer technology. Maybe the fact that all the installation files are dated 1997 is a tip-off that the software is outdated. If their technical support doesn't resolve the problem, I will have to send it back. So far, my stress is way up.

GOOD BUY, BUT DON'T BUY FROM MIND MODULATIONS, June 5, 2009
My review for the Thoughtstream biofeedback device.
The reviews of products at Amazon have from my experience been a good guide. And I have used the reviews to determine when and when not to buy, they are objective and informative, if you go by the average review rating, which is what I go by.
So in order to return the favor that Amazon reviewers have provided me, I will provide you my thoughts on this product and hopefully inform some of the benefits of Biofeedback technology.
The Thoughtstream device is designed to assist one to achieve the: "Relaxation Response". A highly relaxed state that has many benefits. Based on the studies of Dr Benson of Harvard Medical School, such relaxation leads to a reduction in sympathetic nervous system activity, lower heart rate and lower blood pressure. It is also known that the Relaxation Response is helpful in many brain-related conditions, from migraines to irritable bowel syndrome.
The effects of the relaxation response have been confirmed using brain wave and MRI studies. The results show that such relaxation can regulate brain waves associated with relaxed wakefulness, a state of maximal awareness, deep insights, and intuition.
Also studies too numerous to mention have shown that prolonged stress leads to lower immunity levels, heart disease, mental disorders and lower life expectancy. Patients who have a positive and relaxed approach to their illness also have greater recovery and survival rates. The importance of the MIND-BODY connection is tremendous and is often overlooked by practitioners.
So anything that trains the mind to relax and helps it to achieve greater deeper relaxation levels is of enormous benefit. And like a muscle the more you train your mind on relaxation techniques the greater and deeper benefits.
The Thoughstream device is very simple to operate, accurate and from my personal experience very effective in achieving deep relaxation. It provides sound and visual feedback on your relaxation level, feedback that guides you to a deeper state of relaxation. It also provides you with objective feedback, so that you know that you are really relaxing (because sometimes the mind can be misleading), it helps you reach much deeper states of relaxation which may not be possible if you just relied on you own perception and guidance. And if you have trouble concentrating , as I do, it provide a means of focus and control, where my mind would wander otherwise.
It is like a treadmill, it keeps me honest where an exercise bike does not. Additionally, the product comes with computer games and Thoughtsteam that can be linked to your PC.
These games are where the the Thoughstream has a distinct advantage over other biofeedback devices such as the Emwave (which is also excellent). There are a variety of games that assist in many areas, each with a scoring system. There are games that help you practice being calm in a pressure situation, there is one that helps you to develop mental stability.
One game in particular helps you to train your emotions, how to quickly arouse yourself and then to relax, such emotional control has many advantages.
This product is excellent and I highly recommend it.
But with with everything you have to work with it, it will not do it ALL for you.
NOTE: DO NOT PURCHASE FROM MIND MODULATIONS!!!, THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT STINKS, THEY ONLY BOTHER TO REPLY TO EMAILS THAT THEY WANT TO, THEY COULD NOT EVEN BE BOTHERED TO REFER ME TO A MANUFACTURERS EMAIL SITE WHEN I HAD A TECHNICAL PROBLEM.
FROM MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, THEIR SERVICE SUCKS!
BEWARE OF THEIR 30 DAY TRAIL PERIOD, I SUSPECT YOU WILL HAVE GREAT PROBLEMS IF YOU WISH TO RETURN IT.

Decent, November 4, 2009
It's probably actually a fairly good deal for the price, but it has some significant flaws. Most importantly, the digital circuit that allows for a lot of its convenient features, which do make it very easy to use, also makes the pitch step instead of varying continuously. The problem with this is that, rather than the instant, continuous feedback you would get from a continuously varying tone, there's a slight delay due to the stepping, which limits its usefulness, IMHO. If there was another similar device in the same price range that didn't have this defect, I would go with that, but, as far as I know, there isn't, so I guess I could give this one a halfhearted recommendation.
