Editorial Reviews

2009 album from the contemporary Jazz great. Mind Over Matter is inspired by Miles Davis' approach to songwriting, especially in the latter part of his career. ''In his later years, he took a very loose and improvisational approach,'' he says. ''He would start with nothing more than a groove that Marcus Miller or some other member of his band would lay down. And from there he would just develop these melodies that were very simple but at the same time very compelling and very memorable. It was a creative process that bypassed the nuts and bolts of the song and just got right to the essence of it.'' The album features musical assistance from Eric Benet, Jeff Lorber, Will Brock, Will Holton and Gary Taylor.

A very solid effort from my man Najee. I especially like the opener Love You A Life Time, the funky Mind Over Matter (Great Piano work), Forever And A Day After (Made for Cruising), Needless To Say (nice rhythm section), One More Thing (Head Nodder). You won't be disappointed with this one.

This was my first purchase of Najee's music in some time. I felt he had gone stale but this is a new direction and has lots of variety for the c jazz fan.

I can always count on Najee to take me there. I am feeling "Stolen Glances" , " One More Thing", " Sweet Summer's Night" and " Love you a lifetime". Great music.

Its getting a little boring but Najee has done it again, more so for those of us who have seen him live and dig his sound. Another great album, this time with a few latin twists. It was nice meeting and talking with him and his brother at the WTC during those treasured WQCD101.9 lunchtime specials. Warm, polite and professional. Folks DO NOT LET SMOOTH/ Modern/ COOL JAZZ B4 IT DIES - SUPPORT IT IF YOU LOVE IT PLEASE! It is rapidly disappearing from the national airwaves and being replaced by what??? Why should all the good stuff get packed off to Europe and the far east! Made in the USA, should be appricated here also - Demand Your Smooth Jazz. Support US exports buy and watch (concerts) Jazz here!!!

Najee with Eric Benet-yeah! That could be enough but then you add Gary Taylor (best known for his track "Blind to It All") and you have a classic contemporary piece that brings a 20 plus year master back to the forefront-"like we did back in the day...Fourth of July, Summer 1988" Can it get better yes it can-whether you like it slow and low or junky and funky this CD is sure to please.

Hearing this album via a friend caused me to just run to order this selection. Carolina Moon is one of my favorite songs but the whole CD just a great easy listening experience. If I'm in a bad mood, this will set me on the right direction of calmness and peace.

Excellent, any Najee fan will love this CD. I have seen him play many of the songs off of this CD live.
His skills as a musician never disapoint. As always, he has his own sound and does a lot of good work on the soprano and tenor sax as well as the flute. Outside of the late Grover Washington jr., you'd be hard pressed to find any sax player on the smooth jazz charts today that have an authentic Jazz/R&B style out of the late 80's to 90's era( circa CD101.9 FM in NY). It all has a lot to do with growing up and listening to the sounds that came out of South East Queens, NY,(aka Jamaica (Queens NY) ,.St. Albans..Springfield Gardens...Cambria Heights Laurelton...etc) Yes, middle class black america
