Book Description

Anyone can diet in the middle of the night. But in the light of day, when there’s nothing between you and that piece of cherry pie, it comes down to willpower.

Diets don't give you willpower--they demand it. Their role is to change your body chemistry to reduce cravings over time. But if your willpower around food is in short supply, you need something immediate that will automatically stop you at the moment you're reaching for the junk food or the second helping of tamale pie.

You need one of these 12 unique, fast tricks to help you stop eating and beat your food cravings instantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great easy to follow tips August 28, 2012
By Sujatha
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book is highly readable, easy to follow with practical insights and tips. Most tips have no cost that one can simply weave into the daily life with little extra effort. For instance, committing to nano-second of willpower is simple as putting a pinch of black pepper on your tongue to satisfy a craving for a snack.

The author explains that Mind over mouth literally means controlling the urges and cravings at the very beginning with one's will power.

I finished reading the brief summaries in a single sitting. I rate it five star for readability, language and practical insights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reinforcing your willpower to resist food craving August 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a recently diagnosed diabetic, I've had to get serious about losing weight and keeping it off. I've been fairly successful, but it's the between-meals snacking that threatens to undo my successes. Linda Schneider's little book "Mind Over Mouth" looked promising, with some tricks to help cut down the snack cravings, so I checked it out. She's come up with twelve techniques to help reduce the automatic eating that makes dieting so difficult.

Some of the tricks involve physical actions such as drinking a lot of water. That's a no-brainer, since most books on weight loss recommend this, but the author's ideas on when to drink and how much to drink may surprise you. Other tricks involve conjuring up the mental imagery to reinforce your willpower. Technique #4, "That's Disgusting," sounds gross - and it is - but that's the point of it. Technique #10, "Smellicious," is counterintuitive, but if it works as well as the author claims, it would make it a lot easier to walk by a bakery or donut shop!

In the back of the book are some additional techniques that didn't make the top 12, but some of these may be useful for some people. I've used one of these techniques ("Bargain with Yourself") with some success. There are several other techniques that are worth trying.

As a reminder, the book includes a link to a printable "Mind Over Mouth" chart that lists the 12 techniques with brief summaries of each.

The bottom line: A very helpful collection of practical techniques for reducing food cravings and reinforcing your willpower to resist them.

OKAY, there are hundreds of weight loss books and books about dieting, nutrition and everything under the sun. Some are boring and some say the same thing except recycled in a different way. When I began reading "Mind Over Mouth" I felt as if I was walking down the street with a good friend who was just giving me real, honest-to-goodness, advice on what worked for her. The author does a great job in writing conversationally, as if she were standing face-to-face with the reader.

Another thing I liked about this book was that the tips were not something I've heard a zillion times. Even the first tip is something I had never heard of before and they were all very unique. This book would be a perfect book for ALL fitness trainers or coaches to give their clients. It would also be good for anyone who has made some life adjustments that have led to noticeable weight gain. For me, I just had twins last year so these tips are useful to keep me from overindulging. I think pregnant women could benefit, as well since the temptation to overeat during pregnancy is strong and there is nothing in this book that would be dangerous or harmful to a healthy diet while pregnant.

Finally, aside from the tips (which are very easy to read and won't take up your whole day), I like the nice chart that the author made. It's easy enough to print out and hang on my fridge. That alone is a great reminder of the mind being stronger than the temptation of opening the cupboards, refrigerator or running down to the store to grab a quick snack.

I think anyone who is a snacker or who simply likes to eat too much, or who has bad habits (like me) will like this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Tips and Tricks! August 30, 2012
By Andy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is such a great book perfect for anyone who feels like they just don't have any control over their eating habits. Mind Over Mouth is packed with useful tips and tricks for getting around any food urges or sudden cravings. As someone who works in the fitness industry I am always looking out for new and maybe more "outside the box" ways of helping my clients. Reading through the techniques in this book has helped me look at controlling food cravings from another perspective. The book will benefit everyone and not just those people looking to lose some extra pounds. The collection of techniques are easy to follow and fast working.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great list of suggestions! August 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author asked me to accept a copy of her book in exchange for providing a review. I am happy to have accepted the offer.

The is a short book and you can easily consume it in about an hour. However, it's one of those things where if any one of the dozen suggestions is useful then it is easily worth the small price.

Some of the 12 suggestions, such as drinking water, are "old school". Others involving visualization techniques might be new and are possibly more effective. As a result of one of the tips I may start carrying around a mini bottle of TOBASCO sauce the next time I decide to drop a few pounds.

Regardless, in each case you are provided with a description of the "trick", some background on why it might be effective, and a step-by-step process for putting it into practice. You also get ah handy, printable chart that pulls everything together.

The foundation is to use the tips as a support mechanism during a low carb diet. (Something I find particularly effective.) However, they work equally well with any dietary modification program you care to use. Heck, with a little imagination, many of the bio-feedback tips are even effective with other forms of behavior modification programs; for example to stop smoking.

All-in-all, for $3 and a little time you can have some tools that will make a big difference.
