Spectacular - the ultimate in sonic sculpture,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mind: Perpetual Intercourse (Audio CD)
Skinny Puppy has proved again and again that they are the masters of creating artistic sonic sculpture, and Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse proves this as much as any Puppy album. Every song on this album is awesome, from the great opener "One Time One Place" to the short and eerie "Love" and the even more eerie "Stairs and Flowers" to the dancable "Dig It" to the final crunch of "Deepdown Trauma Hounds", M:TPI is a must-have for anyone who likes music, especially if you like Puppy. Buy this - you will NOT regret it.

The most chaotic of SP's works...,

I have to admit this is probably my least favorite Skinny Puppy album, mostly because of the overlaps. By this I mean songs that also appear on other albums. Love is carried over (unnecessarily in my opinion) from Bites... and isn't really changed much. Deep Down Trauma Hounds is too long here and seems unfinished, as does Addiction. Both of the latter two sound ten times better on Cleanse Fold and Manipulate (and in fact are 2 of my favorites from CF&M, and SP in general...)As for the songs that are exclusive to Mind, there really is no middle ground, everything seems to be really good or really bad. I find it hard to listen to without using my handy track skip button. One Time One Place, God's Gift (Maggot), Dig It, Antagonism, and Chainsaw are excellent songs... and the rest just aren't really worth listening to, after you've heard them a couple times. I give this album 4 stars because of those songs listed above, and because it was a gateway of sorts to the best of CF&M. One word of advice, like a previous review stated... this is definitely not for new Skinny Puppy fans. Get one of their later albums first and work your way back.

Too early for it's time,

I can't believe this came out in 1986! This album sounds like it came out in 1996! It's that good, any fan of industrial or dark music would like this cd. You must check out "Dig It".

Mind:best puppy album ever,

This is the album that introduced not only D.R. Goettel, but a much darker, sinister sound-very intricate-abstract and has amazing sound texturing and some of the coolest damn film/TV samples by any band...like a childs nightmare set to music.Brilliant work, unlike any other skinny puppy album-or any other album whatsoever by any band-stands out as a quiet masterpiece; truly sublime...the kind of album you don't want to tell your friends about cuz it's too damn cool! I love 'too dark park' best-[but imho] however this IS the quintessential skinny puppy recording, a must have if you think you dig puppy but have it not! buy it now!-you will be pleased unto fear and terror on lonely nights while contemplating this dark work in our dark world...;)

An Album that Stands the Test of Time,
By
This review is from: Mind: Perpetual Intercourse (Audio CD)
Every generation looks around and thinks that they have invented everything they see; that they were the first to rebel against their parents, that they were the first to grow their hair long/shave it off/dye it pink, that they were the first to take the pure sine waves of electronic music and mutilate them into something so harsh as to seem analog and not digital. OK, maybe that last one was a stretch, but you who have grown up with SlipKnot and Marilyn Manson owe it to yourself to buy this CD and blow your mind with the fact that Skinny Puppy were contemporaries to Wham, Cindi Lauper and Duran Duran, but explored depths of rage and despair long before grunge, long before the term "industrial" was even coined. You haven't known darkness until you hear Ogre scream: "God's Gift Maggot! I am Maggot!"

This was where SP really got rolling. Technology-wise, this album is light-years ahead of "BITES". The percussion, while 80s-sounding, no longer has a tinny ring to it, and the instruments are a whole lot more advanced and varied than the various synth-sounds and beeps of previous albums. This is also a major turning point in their sound. Instead of quick, structured rhyming sequences (like "Assimilate"), Ogre is changing to using more semi-rhymes and "word salads", and when he does rhyme ("Chainsaw"), it is a bit slower than the rapid-fire pace of earlier. The sample-heavy "instrumentals" are much longer than before and while the early ones used the same samples over and over, these are a bit more "dynamic", with many samples telling something very specific. Originally released on record and cassette, TPI had only 9 songs. The rest were added for the 1988 release on CD. Of the original songs, "One Time, One Place", "Three Blind Mice", and "Antagonism" are awesome. "Dig It", their major top-20 hit, is also good, but it takes two repetitive minutes of the same guitar notes until the vocals start. "God's Gift (Maggot)" is a bit too grating and repetitive. "Stairs and Flowers" is great (gotta love that "Tripped on the **** stairs!!" sample). "200 Years" is pretty good but the same samples get overused just a little. "Burnt With Water" is a very long sample-fest with some tortured vocals thrown in, very good. Also, "Love" has been remixed slightly and carried over from "BITES". "Chainsaw", added from the "CHAINSAW EP", is perhaps the best song on the CD. Proto-remixes of "Addiction" and "deep down Trauma Hounds" have also been added. They are great too, but a bit skeletal compared to their "CF&M" versions. There is also an unremarkable dub of "Stairs and Flowers". Overall, a great step forward for SP, and a great album. And if you listen carefully in "Chainsaw", you can hear their synth tripping up.

Not The Best Puppy, but certainly not bad,

This was the 1st SP album I ever fell in love with; I bought it after only listening to 'Dig It' and was at 1st, absolutely disgusted with it.Characterized Nivek's sick vocals on heavy percussion and mvie clip backgrounds, after a weeks or two of brief listenings it began to grow on me. In my opinion TDP & LR are both better albums, but everyone has there opinions and this album will be never forgotten as my stairway out of my ninny stage and into the 'sonically distasteful'.

this album is closest in comparison to cleanse fold and manipulate.. the recording seems to be very similar.. the original version of addiction appears on this album as well as deep down trauma hounds, and that would be this records main weakness.. these tracks in my opinion arent as good as the ones on the following cleanse fold and manipulate.... they arent bad in any way, but just not as effective. after that, there really isnt any other negative points.. all the songs are cleverly made, and some songs like dig it, stairs and flowers, god's gift and one time one place are excellent creations of odd and chilling sound collages... there are some effective instrumentals as well in burnt with water, 200 years .. this is a good cd, but not as good as too dark park/aint it dead yet/and vivisect.. once u are into puppy tho, you'll definitely enjoy this one..

Mind: Perpetual Masterpiece.,

Skinny Puppy's "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" is a brilliant masterpiece. The album is well developed, well layered, and very unique among the music industry. This album is dark, and the sounds will drown you in its shadows. The lyrics are dark and intellectual. Ogre's strong philosophical views, and his dangerous voice make KORN look like barney dancing with little children. If you do not enjoy the CD it is because of a few things.
A) It was too hellish seeming B) You as a listener, are naive and young to subculture music. C) You like guitars and bass and stimuli that isn't original. D) You listen to Slipknot, who looks like a pussy compared to Skinny Puppy. E) There are more, but I'll spare the insults The heavy mechanical noises, and the infinite seeming sounds, come from all corners. The album truly defines individual artisty, and should be taken in as an art concept, it may be weak as something to head band too....which is ridiculous anyway. This album isn't one a group of people can listen to. Give the album a try, and listen to it in your room. Take in the art that is Skinny Puppy. Personal Favorites One Time One Place Stairs and Flowers God's Gift Maggot Dig It Addiction Deep Down Trauma Hounds The most popular of the songs on the album.

As a huge long-time fan, if i could only have 1 album by SP, I would have to pick this one. Thru the years, this one represents SP the best: even though they eventually went thru various changes.
