5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Bolin fans, January 26, 2000
By
D. Hartley (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mind Transplant (Audio CD)
This album was released at the peak of the mid-70's fusion movement, and has aged well (aside from those elephant bells and platform shoes that appear in the band photos!). Although designed as a showcase for drummer Mouzon's prodigious chops,it is Tommy Bolin's passionate, fluid guitar work that shines brightest in these sessions. Hardcore Bolin fans undoubtedly have this in thier collection already, but if you are just discovering his work, this is a must-have after acquiring the solo, James Gang, Deep Purple, and Billy Cobham albums. I would also recommend this release to you if you enjoy the fusion style of guitarists like John McLaughlin,Jeff Beck, John Tropea and Alan Holdsworth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Believe it or not, a jazz album that flat out ROCKS!, June 21, 2000

This review is from: Mind Transplant (Audio CD)
I must admit that I bought this album because of Tommy Bolin but he isn't the only guitarist on the record and aside from an admitted bias for Tommy everyone on it plays great! This album shows that Mouzon is as good,if not better, than any drummer, the playing is powerfully frighting! I know that Cobham's "Spectrum" (also w/ Bolin)is the "standard" that most people think of for jazz fusion but I think that overall "Mind Transplant" is a better recording with some really over the top playing. Too bad that it is currently out of print because if you like fusion jazz, ferocious drumming, and excellent guitar work-this album is for you! If it becomes available again, BUY IT! Well worth any cost, you won't be dissappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best jazz-rock album ever!, April 2, 2001
This review is from: Mind Transplant (Audio CD)
For me, this is the greatest Fusion album ever, even better than Cobham's "Spectrum". Amazing, incredible drumming of Alphonse Mouzon and Tommy Bolin with extremely great solos, but also Lee Ritonour and Jay Graydon are excellent. This is really one of the best albums I've ever heard. This is Fusion at it's best - and a milestone in Fusion music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky AND Bombastic!, January 28, 2004
This review is from: Mind Transplant (Audio CD)
In most cases like this (notably with Billy Cobham)a fusion
drummer will get lost in bombastic solo's on their albums. And as
far as Alphonse Mouzon is concerned he's no different.Only thing is he is supported by bassy, funky backbeats that give all of these similar-sounding tracks flare and charecter. If there would be one complaint it's that funk is about downplaying-about
what you DON'T hear and in that respect the music on "Mind Transplant" has far too many heavy and pyrotechnical instrumental solo's in parts to be as funky as it's basic rhythms are.So you lose on one point and gain in another.Yet the
overall compositions are very strong and Mouzon's solo's are never indulgent-just loud and fast.So as far is this type of funk-fusion goes I recommend this artist and album. It may even
serve to alter your opinion on jazz fusion.
