Keep it Simple,
This review is from: Mind Walks: 100 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress, Stay Motivated, and Nourish Your Soul (Paperback)
A lot of books on relaxation and stress-reduction are complicated and time consuming. Mindwalks is so simple. The concepts are easy to understand and they are not easily lost when you begin your journey. Start off slow with the book because it is so easy to read the whole thing through. Read a couple of different mindwalks and actually attempt them on a walk. It makes the book so much more enjoyable. Two thumbs up to Mary Frakes for an excellent, simple, and inspirational book.

A book that goes beyond New Ageyness or athletics,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mind Walks: 100 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress, Stay Motivated, and Nourish Your Soul (Paperback)
This is a beautifully written book in the tradition of people like Thoreau who inspire us to examine what we're doing more thoroughly, and experience it more deeply. If Frakes's book recalls New Age inspirational writing, it goes far beyond that. Instead of improvised spirituality, there's a lot of authentic everyday wisdom. It's also good to see a book that proclaims not just the health benefits of exercise, but what it can do for our minds and souls. I'd recommend the book to anybody, but especially to boomers like myself who may not be jogging any more, and who are receptive to the suggestion to pay more attention to the outer and inner worlds. It's a unique book that I'll come back to for a long time.

I picked this up on a whim because the price was right, and boy, have I been glad I did! It goes so far beyond just reinforcing the mind/body connection as it relates to walking. It's beautifully written; I like to read one or two sections every day to get me inspired in the morning. It's helped me use my walks more creatively, and look at the world in a new way.I can't recommend it highly enough.

The big hatpin,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mind Walks: 100 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress, Stay Motivated, and Nourish Your Soul (Paperback)
I call it "the big hatpin." We're all looking for more time/space for ourselves. This little book has short, easy-to-digest chapters (no major commitment required). Just the thing to get the mentally overburdened, physically underachieving boomer off the rear end and onto the feet -- so we feel we're claiming time and space for our own, not just "doing something I know I ought to do."

A Wonderful Book Full of Inspiring Ideas to Get You Walking,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mind Walks: 100 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress, Stay Motivated, and Nourish Your Soul (Paperback)
I was delighted to discover this book. Although I love walking and consider it the best exercise there is, I'm very Type A and was unable to push myself to walk very often, because I got bored. Frakes offers so many suggestions on how to avoid boredom - ones that really work - that I'm now putting in a couple of miles a day, and my Mind Walk is something I really look forward to, because I know that I'm being enriched on three levels - physical, mental, and spiritual. I'm enjoying myself, too. Mind Walks, which also happens to be beautifully written, is an absolute must for anyone who likes to walks or who wants to start walking.

Mindwalks keeps you grounded when life is overwhelming.,

This review is from: Mind Walks: 100 Easy Ways to Relieve Stress, Stay Motivated, and Nourish Your Soul (Paperback)
As a working mom, every day is hectic and some days I feel that I will be pulled apart by dueling responsibilities. Reading a chapter of Mindwalks instantly restores my perspective. It reminds me that walking across downtown Boston to pick up my lunch can offer me much more nourishment than that supplied by the cup of soup fetched from the deli du jour. This 15 minute excursion can also nourish my soul. All I need to do is look for the little surprises that sourround me. Certainly Ms. Frakes is telling us to "stop and smell the roses" and she encourages us to embrace "a glass is half-full" attitude, but she also acknowledges the realities of today's world. A world of imperfect families, downsizing and king sized stress. Ultimately she reminds us that it is also a world of pleasant surprises and great beauty tucked away in almost every corner we turn. As I internalized her message and carried it with me on my own walks, I also came to see the power of these small things, both individually and cumulatively, on my life.
