5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books you will ever read
This book really puts into perspective the life/money relationship and is very helpful in making rational decisions when it comes to money. It also gives a great deal of tips on how to conquer and avoid financial barriers. I highly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was expecting more
After reading "Personal Finances for Dummies" I was expecting more of Eric Tyson. You will find this book useful if this the first book on personal finances (or written by Mr. Tyson) you read, otherwise I don't think it will teach you much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book!, March 21, 2006
This review is from: Mind over Money: Your Path to Wealth and Happiness (Hardcover)
I picked up this book just to review the contents and ended up reading it right there and then from cover to cover. Sound odd for a book with the subject matter being financial advice? It is, because few financial advice books are written with the heart of the everyday Joe in mind, but this one is.
Author Eric Tyson has packed his new work chock full of top of the notch information to help everyone from the everyday Joe to the multi-millionaire tycoon have a better understanding of achieving financial goals and the many pitfalls to avoid. Think this work is boring? Think again!
Our author breaks down his work down into nine chapters with subtitles after each, such as:

3 -The Workaholic: Fitting Life into Your Work (my favoritie chapter)
Why do we work so much
The Damage Done by Working So Much
Working Solutions
How Do I Know If I'm A Workaholic

I particularly enjoyed this chapter on the Workaholic because that is who I tend to be. The insight was amazing and certainly left me making a strong decision to make some changes. Excellent!

6- The Supersaver: Hoarding and Cheating
The Supersaver personality
Overcoming Oversaving

I had to giggle some in reading this chapter since I know a few people that I would personally call 'cheap,' you know the ones always afraid to buy a coke because that dollar has to be saved for the rainy day. This chapter really brings it home, as do all those inside this outstanding book.

In each chapter he talks to you not just about your money but about your life and how important it is that money does not control your life, who you think you are, or where your going. His advise helps you set priorities in order and get your financial situation to line up with your life. He shows the pitfalls of excessive spending and living beyond our means by using credit cards and explains the harm that can do. He even takes you back to your childhood and asks you to uncover any reasons why you are controlling your money the way you are, bringing to remembrance youthful memories that have now influenced your financial behavior. Interesting.
To be honest with you I have never seen a book on financial planning quite like this one. It is fresh, full of heart and has a real feel that this author actually cares if you win or lose in this game; that's something you don't see everyday. The information given is so detailed that even someone like me can pick it up and run to victory with it.
You see, this is a book that isn't all about money, but all about you first and money second. It will help you to put priorities in order, understand many pitfalls and help you avoid them, and make you think, what am I doing, where am I going, and what is important to me and what am I sacrificing to achieve that. If I were to give this book a sub-title it would have to be, "Money and Me," because our lives definitely do revolve around our money and in this work you will find how to make money work for you, not you work for money. I highly recommend this book; it is a gem and a keeper.

I picked up Tyson's book not sure about another personal finance book but this one helped me and my husband come together on our money issues. This is NOT your average personal finance book! I'm usually very reluctant on personal finance but I loved this book! Very helpful!

I was really, really surprised by this book. I only wish I had read it before we entered into our recent car lease! The book does have plenty of specific suggestions on buying, borrowing, investing, etc. HOWEVER, it's great strength and surprise is that it got me to think about my spending habits and investing behaviors like I never have before. Now, I only have to get my husband to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars informative for my wife and I...and the kids, January 31, 2006
This review is from: Mind over Money: Your Path to Wealth and Happiness (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book that takes a common sense approach to handling finances that my wife and I found helpful. The best part is that we were able to share much of this information with our three children who receive no basic financial instruction in school. Tyson makes reading and understanding these topics easy.

There are tons of personal finance books out there and it can be difficult to choose among them. Mind over Money is one of the good ones, the gems.

This book is basically a study into several different money personality archetypes and it includes helpful solutions to avoid the pitfalls outlined. The book really helps one understand why people spend more than they make, why they use credit cards and gamble, and a whole lot more. Eric Tyson has a knack for writing sensibly, without preaching to readers. He doesn't just make suggestions and statements, but he also backs them up with examples and references where need be. Further, he has a great track record from his other highly reviewed books such as Personal Finance for Dummies, which is an absolute must read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that money plays an important part in their life and would like to be able to better control it rather than it controlling you. Even if you typically hate money type books, I think you will find this one refreshingly easy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Great material to persuade your family!, January 31, 2006
By
This review is from: Mind over Money: Your Path to Wealth and Happiness (Hardcover)
Money causes endless disagreements in our home. We found this book a refreshing breath of fresh air! It easily allowed us to see what each of us was doing wrong. And we've had the fringe benefit of helping family members see their troubled ways. For example, the investing chapter shows how people who over monitor and trade more earn worse returns. It also cites that the daily tracking of investments is linked to poor mental health. The spending chapters allowed us to see specific ideas for questioning the way we approach purchase decisions. In the end, what's great about Mind Over Money is that the book got us to recognize and rethink our money habits and how we talk about money as a couple. We each had to give in on some things for the betterment of our family. Highly, most highly recommended five star book!

Eric Tyson's "Mind Over Money" is an extemely innovative and personal approach in assisting the readers in managing their personal finances.

His emphasis is on the "person behind the money" and how financial decisions are influenced by emotions, patterns of behavior, spending temptations, etc. I think this book will have a tremendous impact on readers who are experiencing financial challenges in their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind Over Money by Tyson, February 9, 2006
This review is from: Mind over Money: Your Path to Wealth and Happiness (Hardcover)
This book will assist you in planning a financial future. The author asks that we do the following:

- avoid financial decisions until you can plan properly
- be on the alert for gambling foolishly
- avoid detrimental behaviors
- don't be a workaholic
- do not hoard

The author emphasizes good career planning from the beginning.
He asks that we avoid frivolous purchases to conserve cash
for investment purposes. Never approach investments with too
much unthinking euphoria. This will lead to certain losses.

The book advises that we purchase insurance with high deductibles
so that the difference in savings can be invested to increase
the personal financial net worth. In all things, the volume
encourages us to focus on value as a condition precedent to
enhancing our net worth. A strength of this book is that it
teaches the reading public how to plan for the future
and how to build personal equity. The writing style is simple.

Tyson stands out as one of the most readable Personal Finance authors in the world. He has his priorities correct and great focus on how to help readers who are just starting and those who have amassed assets. Great reading for the airplane and and an asset for the home library.

The perfect High School or College graduation gift.
