Kids can build anything they can imagine.

They can used interchangeably with those systems, and thus can be used to construct all the other types of structures one might build with Keva planks.
PurpleVermont
It was only a box of pieces of wood with a few marbles in it.

I bought this for my 9yo son. We have only had it for 2 days, but he and his 14yo brother have been immensely enjoying it. Unlike the previous reviewer, I understood what we were getting -- a set of 200 identical wooden planks with instructions for *building* ramps, chutes, funnels and "crazy contraptions". Because no glue or connectors are used, it *is* challenging to build the contraptions but that is also what makes it an extremely open-ended toy. The first night my 9yo was a bit frustrated. We talked about how it wouldn't be much fun if I got him a toy where he "beat the boss" on the first night, and that with this toy he'd have a chance to improve and get better at using it over time, and that as evidenced by his older brother, he'd probably still be enjoying 5 years from now. He took that to heart and by the next morning was already starting to master some of the building forms and had created his own working contraption.

This toy requires patience. It would be well-suited for the type of child who enjoys building domino runs -- it requires a similar level of patience, precision and resilience in the face of the inevitable mishaps.

The planks are identical in size and shape to Kapla or other Keva planks, though these are pine and not hardwood as the other more expensive sets are. They can used interchangeably with those systems, and thus can be used to construct all the other types of structures one might build with Keva planks. The worksmanship seems excellent and precise.

The balls appear to be colored ping pong balls and the only downside to this is that one of our balls already got crushed somehow. However the upside to this is that they are easily replaced/supplemented by readily available ping pong balls.

My 8 and 9 year old boys are Lego fanatics and have built the most complicated kits we can get, they also are fascinated by the Rube-Goldberg type contraptions they have been able to build during science camps and classes. Contraptions seemed like a great addition to their building collection. I was a little put off by some of the reviews that said they were frustrating but ordered them anyway. These do demand a degree of patience but my kids have amazed me with their creations, building 3 foot tall and 8 foot long contraptions that are truly complicated and wonderful. with young boys, the fun doesn't end with the build and roll, the destruction part is equally fun for them!! A great and durable product!

We bought this for my 6yr. son for Xmas. He wanted a plastic marble run. My hubby and I studied the one he wanted and the other different ones that are available. We came to the conclusion that the one that he wanted; he would have lost interest rather quickly. I did show him some of the videos online of this product and he was amazed but still wanted the plastic motorized one. We, my husband and I; could not justify the money when we knew he would lose interest. So for less money we bought him the 200 piece Contraptions! I know they are just wood blocks but you should see what he builds... I've helped him with a few small runs, but he has built towers, stages, furniture, and race track for his MBox cars that takes up his whole bedroom floor. He plays with these almost every day since X-mas. He's learning many things, the main one is patience! He gets frustrated when things fall down, and we tell him try to find another way to rebuild it stronger and an hour later "Look, I did it!" We Love It!

This is a great toy in theory but my 12 year old had trouble getting the planks lined up perfectly.
He would spend a lot of time getting it all lined up and would release the ball and if all the planks weren't perfectly in place, we would have a malfunction and the whole tower would fall. Then he'd have to set it up all over again. It got very frustrating for him. A good lesson in patience for sure.
Now, when things were lined up right, it was a lot of fun but more time was spent rebuilding the tower than he or I expected.

We gave this to our son for his 7th birthday because he loves marble runs. The first night he had it he, his four-year-old sister and mom and dad played and built for THREE HOURS! The next morning my son was up at 6:30 building again. I love that it's challenging and I love that the kids have to use their imaginations to create tunnels, chutes, race tracks, etc. It is great for building problem solving skills and learning basic principles of physics... without realizing you're doing either. It is also a great toy for the whole family to do together. Even our 4 - year-old was able to build her own simple "marble runs." This set of simple wood planks with the great and easy-tol-follow instruction book is a wonderful buy! We are already planning to purchase another set so we can build more complex structures.

I bought this for my 10 year old son for Christmas and could tell that he was a little overwhelmed when he looked at the instructional booklet. I sat on the floor and helped him build the hopper and funnel, easing his anxiety. He has since built quite a few contraptions on his own, and so has his twin sister. A steady hand is a must and so is patience because towers can be knocked over fairly easily if not constructed well.

This toy has so many possibilities and will still be played with years to come because of its potential complexity. It's hard to outgrow this toy.

The Keva balls may need to be replaced with ping pong balls since one of the them was accidentally dented by my son, but as we found out through trial and error, heavier substitutes don't work, so I see why the balls are so light. I have not been able to find Keva ball replacements, so I will shop for ping pong balls.
