A Revelation, October 19, 2003
This review is from: Mindbending Sounds of (Audio CD)
If you're a fan of the Nuggets collections, this CD will be a revelation. I first heard "I Don't Understand" on Little Steven's Underground Garage on the radio a few weeks ago, and was blown away. These guys have got that '66 to '68 garage thing down perfectly. Apparently they've been doing it for about 25 years, and it shows on this record. They're not trying to _do_ retro music, this _is_ their music.
The songs are consistently good, with lots of attitude, hooks and variety. Not a ballad in the bunch to disrupt the vibe. You'll hear echoes of Love's "Seven and Seven Is", the Stones "Paint it Black" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash", Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction", "Gloria" by Them, and Jefferson Airplane circa Surrealistic Pillow. Great stuff.

I picked this CD up when I getting their newest CD. I'm glad I did!, September 20, 2007
September 18, 2007 was a day I splurged on two Chesterfield Kings CD's and Rhino's newest 4CD box set. This CD has been around since 2003 and I kept putting off on getting it. Boy am I glad I bought it!
If you like garage-rock revival and The Rolling Stones at their best inspired rock this CD is hard to beat. I managed two get three 5-star rated songs off of it.
Pay attention to the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" item. I would say check out "Let's Go Get Stoned" by Chesterfield Kings, "Outta The Nest" by Vipers, "The Essential Radio Birdman" by Radio Birdman (one of my best Aussie garage finds), and of course "Psychedelic Sunrise" by the Chesterfield kings.
Anyway here is my mini-review of this CD:
(4) Trip Through Tomorrow - The Chesterfield Kings - 2003 - "One of the BEST tracks on this CD? GOOD first impression. Notable psychedelic guitar hooks." - The Mindbending Sounds Of...The Chesterfield Kings (Wicked Cool Record)-2006.
(8) Stems And Flowers - The Chesterfield Kings - 2003 - "ACCURATE Seeds-esque guitar interplay. Very good Jagger-esque vocals. Play on words? stems, flowers, Seeds-esque, get it?" - The Mindbending Sounds Of...The Chesterfield Kings (Wicked Cool.
(11) Mystery Trip - The Chesterfield Kings - 2003 - "The BEST track on this CD bar none. Greg Prevost sounds BETTER then Mick Jagger on this one. I have a outstanding video of this song at my site that must be seen." - The Mindbending Sounds Of...The Chesterfield Kings (Wicked Cool Record)-2006.
Other songs of note are:
(6) Death Is The Only Real Thing - "From the opening guitar hooks and Jagger-esque vocals you know this song is going to be good! GOOD first impression."
(7) Disconnection - "Outstanding Jagger-esque vocals. Excellent guitar RIFFS. "
(9) Flashback - "Another tribute to "The Rolling Stones". It don't get better then this! Some nice psych guitar riffs."
(14) The Fading Of My Mind - "Shades of the Stones at their sitar psychedic best. A hint of backwards guitar to get you higher."
If your a Chesterfield Kings fan you can't go wrong having this in your collection.

They've come a long way.., April 22, 2006
This review is from: Mindbending Sounds of (Audio CD)
I'm from the Rochester area and purchased the Chesterfield Kings's first album back when I was in high school (early 80's). It was a cool album and cool to see a bunch of covers done so well by a bunch of local guys (You could see Greg and Andy working in the local record store House of Guitars. In fact, you still can!). I bought their second album also, but didn't think too much of it. They were trying their hand at writing their own songs, with mixed results.
I hadn't purchased anything by the band in 20 years but did recently when I was in a local cd store browsing. This cd is incredible. They've become great songwriters in the years since I listened to them last. If you like early Stones' singles, like Jumpin' Jack Flash, I think you'll like this stuff. This stuff sounds kind of trippy at times, but maintains that kind of snotty-punk vibe of the early Stones. Very good.
