Editorial Reviews

Review

“This reader-friendly book is a masterful guide for parents. With great gentleness and humility, Mindful Discipline weaves together the rigor of science, the wisdom of reflection, and decades of clinical experience, offering parents one of the most exceptional road maps on how to raise happy, resilient, and emotionally healthy children.”
Andrew Weil, MD, author of Spontaneous Happiness and Eight Weeks to Optimum Health

“If you raise your children with respect for who they are, nourishing compassion, clarity, and wise limits, they will bloom and blossom. The tools for mindfully doing so are here in these pages.”
—Jack Kornfield, PhD, author of A Path with Heart

“I’m deeply impressed and inspired by what [Shapiro and White] are offering the world! It fills such an essential niche, and moves forward our understanding of ‘how to’ in an important way.”
—Tara Brach, PhD, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge

“This intelligent, tender, and beautifully written book helps parents tap into their inner wisdom and create the optimal emotional environment for their child's growth and development. Loaded with powerful exercises grounded in clinical expertise and scientific theory, this book will help all of us navigate the path of parenting with greater ease, clarity, and grace.”
—Kristin Neff, PhD, associate professor of human development and culture at the University of Texas at Austin and author of Self-Compassion

“Coming from an expert on mindfulness and a leading pediatrician, this deeply wise book shows parents how to nourish both self-discipline and self-worth inside the children they love. Grounded in research, full of personal examples, and loaded with down-to-earth suggestions, this book is a gem.”
—Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Hardwiring Happiness

“Shauna Shapiro and Chris White have created a wonderful integration of the power of mindful awareness and the insights from studies of child development and the brain to lovingly guide us to a more rewarding and effective way of being as parents. The science of attachment reveals that the most robust predictor of our child’s development is how we have come to make sense of our lives from the inside out. This book beautifully illuminates how the previously independent fields of attachment and of mindfulness actually share common ground—that knowing yourself is the best gift you can give to your children. An effective way of achieving this parental presence is through mindfulness, and the stories, ideas, and exercises of Mindful Discipline offer a fabulous guide to creating the deep and receptive internal knowing that will empower your children to become resilient, reflective, and compassionate beings themselves. What better gift can you offer of yourself to your child, and the world?”
Daniel J. Siegel, MD, clinical professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, school of medicine; author of Brainstorm and The Mindful Brain; and coauthor of No-Drama Discipline, Parenting from the Inside Out, and The Whole-Brain Child

Mindful Discipline should be read by every parent. This book contains the operating instructions for family life that none of us received in school. Twenty-five years ago mindfulness saved my life. Now it informs all of my actions, including the way I am with my children.”
Noah Levine, author of Dharma Punx and Refuge Recovery

“This finely and sensitively written book points to the fragility and resilience of a child’s soul and demonstrates so clearly how in need each child is of an equally fragile and resilient adult’s guidance. An adult, however, having been on the Earth much longer, has been able to add experience to the fragility and resilience and thus becomes the author of the child’s life until he or she is experienced enough to become the author himself or herself. This beautiful book is a wonderful guide to parents who wish to lovingly, mindfully, and clearly accompany their children at the beginning of their life journey.”
—Meinir Davies, management and teaching team coordinator at the New Village School, Sausalito, CA

Mindful Discipline is the perfect guide for conscious parents and teachers. Grounded in solid neuroscience, it shows how to be loving and remain centered, while teaching children to develop their own internal wisdom and good hearts. This book is a gift!”
James Baraz, cofounder of Spirit Rock Meditation Center and coauthor of Awakening Joy: 10 Steps to Happiness

Mindful Discipline is an intelligent and creative approach to the omnipresent challenge of parenting: how to be kind and loving yet firm and in control. I was struck by the multiple levels of authority the authors drew upon: deep scholarship, personal struggles with parenting, and hard-earned meditative insight.”
—Fred Luskin, PhD, director of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and author of Forgive for Good

I highly recommend pediatrician Chris White’s wonderful new book, Mindful Discipline. Written with co-author and psychologist Shauna Shapiro, these two do a great job of pointing out specific things parents can do in the moment to make their home more harmonious and have more fun!

I’m a practical pediatrician. Theory is wonderful, but ultimately it comes down to the choices you make in the moment. So how do we change our patterns and do something differently? Stop the yell? Or even the swat on the tush?

This book really provides a lesson in mindfulness as a parent, WITHOUT THE GUILT. You feel as you read, that the authors are right there with you in the daily struggles we all go through as parents. And that each moment is an opportunity, to stop, regroup and be mindful of how we would like to proceed.

Most powerfully, the message here is that you know what to do already. Parents today are bombarded with endless information that creates an atmosphere of anxiety and self-doubt. I was looking for directives when I initially picked up this book but the reality is there is not one perfect right solution for every family, and you have to feel your way to the right solution for your family. There will also be challenges presented in reading this book- how do you become more mindful of your own behavior? Be prepared to work first on yourself. As I have seen time and again, when we change ourselves, we change the spectrum of responses we see in our children.

Provides an intuitive and supportive counterpoint to the extremes of authoritarian 1-2-3 parenting vs. attachment gone too permissive parenting.

Highly recommended for the toddler through teen years.

This book has inspired me to change may ways in which I interact with my child on a daily basis - one of those "a ha" reads where you can't believe how much you didn't know. Hats off to the authors for providing an easy to read and enjoyable book for the parents who are trying to do things in a new way, not just the way most of us were raised. On my top 3 parenting book list!

As a parent of two young children, I found Mindful Discipline incredibly useful. I’ve read a variety of parenting books over the years, but I got so much out of this book. The mindfulness awareness exercises helped me put the approach of “mindful discipline” into practice. The authors’ personal stories are easy to relate to and provide honest illustrations that bring the material to life. This is a wonderful book that I will highly recommend to friends and family.

This book could give me theoretical aspects of mindful discipline, but not much actual /hands-on tips and examples. I wanted it to be more like Parenting with love and logic by Foster Cline and Jim Fay because it had a lot of good examples to follow. However, this book suggests a way to fix one behavioral problem and stops there. So many times, things do not go that smoothly (IF so, why would I order this book?!). So I wanted to see something like... "Okay, if this doesn't work..." and suggest a plan B at least. I read this book in the midst of busy schedule, and I regretted reading it with sleepy and weary eyes and buying it with my own money. Waste of time and energy!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. This is the 20th parenting book I have read in the last two years. Yes, 20th. I have a strong willed little boy who leaves me feeling completely in over my head some days. The previous books I read all contradicted each other and left me more confused. This book is straight forward and exactly what I needed. It has been three weeks since we have had a tantrum (from both my 3 year old and myself) and I feel confident in my parenting and his "discipline." I was going against my natural instincts trying to parent without hurting my child's feelings and giving him too much authority over his life. I have set healthy boundaries and remained firm, but loving and he is responding very well. We are all happier thanks to this book.

This is a must read for any parent who wants to be a mindful parent. Shapiro looks at the issues and how to handle them at different stages/ages. There is no judgement call in this book which makes it easier to accept the advice. It is a good book for the thoughtful parent.

I found this book to be super helpful and full of spot on insights, as well as entertaining and well written. I'd recommend the book for parenting of kids pretty much any age (certainly not limited to toddlers). As a side benefit, I also must say the book was helpful in (indirectly) giving me some helpful perspectives about my relationship with my own parents.

This book has tons of practical information that can easily be applied to parenting. It feels fresh in its view as parenting as a supplement to the natural course of a child's growth. As a parent, it allowed me to exhale.
