Product Description

MindPlace is pleased to offer a USB version of our popular ThoughtStream Biofeedback Performance System. This tool measures the rapid, tiny fluctuations in your skin's electrical resistance known as the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). When your psychological stress/arousal level increases, skin moisture increases and ThoughtStream USB can help teach you to monitor and control this. With regular practice it is an ideal relaxation training system.

Through use, the Thoughtstream learns what sensitivity level works best for you. It's very easy to use! Simply put on the included hand sensor, allow the machine to calibrate to your current state, and immediately you are tracking your stress level with the goal to go as low as you can.

ThoughtStream USB employs three forms of feedback:

Visual: The front panel display starts out all red. Your goal is to turn it all green. It automatically progresses through a series of levels each further down from your initial state. Auditory: Use the included headphones and learn to lower the pitch of the melodic sound. The sound follows the readings providing feedback allowing you to close your eyes and relax. Computer: Connect the ThoughtStream USB to your Windows PC and use the free ThoughtStream Interface software to graph your sessions. Compare multiple sessions to see how you have been progressing. You can also add interactive biofeedback games by purchasing the Mental Games computer software.

The ThoughtStream Biofeedback System allows precise and tailored readings suited for use in your daily life. It is portable, powerful and easy stress management tool, helping you to calm down and be more aware. Biofeedback needs to be "learned" so be patient with yourself in the process!.

The machine I use at my psychologist's office is a heart rate variabity program and is one I really like. The price of the model he has was $300- and out of my price range. I wanted a biofeedback device for my own use and studied all the reviews I coud find on the popular models. I went with the Thoughstream because it could be used with windows 7, didn't have a lot mixed reviews and was reasonably priced. I also checked out their forum board support and found the responses from the administrator to be very fast and helpfull. The Thoughtstreem works as advertized. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that the galvanic response dosen't seem to measure changes like the HR variablity. I'm used to more immdiate and obvious feedback. The bar graph tracking program was a pain to get to install correctly too.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase. The Toughtstream allows me to conduct numerous short relaxation sessions throughout the day while provding me with accurate feedback as to how well I changed my relaxation level. Just having it is a motivation tool to practice.

I use this on occasion in my hypnotherapy practice, and have found it to be accurate, responsive, and effective at a very affordable price. Having the ability to chart a long session on a laptop, is helpful. Over the course of a 20 - 30 minute hypnosis session, it's interesting to note that not only does everyone have a unique response curve, but that some people seem to have no bottom. The line charts down gently and linearly for the whole session.

It's especially effective for folks who have a hard time associating with their bodies, not only to show them how to relax, but simply to offer some external evidence that it's even possible for them.

Great little unit - I have one of the older models, but now Mindplace has re-released the Thoughtstream with a USB connector - that is going to make it so much easier to connect to your computer and track your progress.

You attach the sensor to the palm and start the unit - it "calibrates" for the session by reading your initial resistance.
LEDs gradually turn from red to green when you are relaxed, and if you choose to use headphones - the tone changes to deeper as you relax.

I have wanted a biofeedback device for years but most devices on the market are far too expensive and complicated for home use. I've been very pleased with the ThoughtStream USB device. The price is great and it works exactly as advertised. I also really liked that I could choose to either connect it to my computer or bring it with me "offline" wherever I go. I have been meditating and practicing auto-relaxation techniques for years but the one thing you don't get with those practices is the objective, external feedback which essentially says, "Yes, this technique is working for you better than another." This is precisely what biofeedback provides. A mild, pleasant tone which goes from higher pitch to lower pitch as you let go of stress and relax. There is also a helpful LED color system on the device itself which goes from all red (not relaxed) to all orange, to all yellow and finally to all green (most relaxed). There are a total of 8 levels of sensitivity as well which gives you a fairly nuanced analysis of your sessions if you choose to make notes of where you started and where you finished with each session.

Now a word about the software. The only reason I hesitate to give this product a full 5 star rating is because the documentation on the software installation is really lacking. It's not very straightforward that you need to install a separate driver to get the software to work (I have Windows 7) and when I did go to install it I had to hunt around on the website because it wasn't available on the ThoughtStream software support page (it turns out it's the same driver as used for their Procyon product - I had to download it from that section after a bit of a hunt). Having said all that however, once I DID install the driver the graphical software worked great.

This is a great little biofeedback device for those of us that have their mind racing with thoughts all the time. I have been using this to help with insomnia and for general relaxation to get my blood pressure and heart rate down (side effects from recently added Rx). For comparison I had tried the StressEraser - not helpful, in fact *very* stressful! That unit made me feel like I was hooked up to a lie detector.

The lights on the unit give me something to focus on and help keep my mind calm and clear. I don't use the sound+headset included as I gain more benefits by focusing strictly on the lights. Pleased with this product and recommended.

When I popped this baby out of the box, it felt like a cheap piece of plastic junk. When I set it up (easy to do) it exceeded my expectations. I wanted a bio-feedback device for help to tell me how much strain my body is under, and when I am so exhausted I need to rest. I hate doing nothing, so I will run my poor fibromyalgia/CFS body into the ground, ignoring symptoms until I get stopped in my tracks. The Thoughtstream lets you begin at any level, and will re-calibrate itself to your situation each new time you use it. I like that I can view my progress via the color bars. Oddly enough, I don't do as well with the audio feature, but that will just be one new variable for when I have this machine licked (so far, I am guessing that will be some time from now). Right now, I know that when all the bars are red and I am on the easiest setting, and I am unable to decrease any bars that I need to go straight to bed. I hook up in the morning and throughout the day after daily activities or rest periods, and it helps me to better structure my day to enable my body to heal. I wanted to get a device that used brainwave biofeedback, but they were way too expensive. This was a little more than I wanted to pay for a galvanic skin indicator, but it has proven itself an excellent choice for my needs.
