This review is from: Mind's Eye (Paperback)
I was looking for a good book that would not be too taxing, when I saw Mind's Eye on sale at the Waterstone's. It seemed like an excellent idea, since McCauley has consistently been one of my favorite speculative fiction writers.
However, the book simply did not deliver what I was looking to find. Generally, I love McCauley's characters. This time I found them warmed up and warmed over. Harriet, for instance, never really interested me. Too bad-- the characters have been one of the strongest things about books like Fairyland and The Secret of Life. It may, in truth, be my own bias showing that I did not respond well to Mind's Eye. It is much closer to a thriller than speculative fiction, and speculative fiction is really much more my genre. Readers who enjoy more mainstream thrillers may find this is exactly what they are looking to read. It is not bad, exactly, it just was not up to the level that I normally find in McAuley's novels. A strange piece of graffiti awakens a memory of childhood injury for Alfie Flowers. When he attempts to find the artist behind the tag, he finds out that he is not the only one in the chase. Mind's Eye takes its protagonists on a race through London and deep into the heart of Kurdish territory. Alfie must unravel the riddle of his own past in order to help solve the problem that the world is currently facing. |
